I'll put this out first: You've seen the framework of this film before; outcast in village earns respect after his uniqueness saves everyone. But the way it is done is pretty damn enjoyable.
The movie starts in a viking village, that, as is pretty usual, is under attack by dragons. Hiccup, son of Stoic (the village leader) is the tiny, weak, and clumsy kid relegated to blacksmith assistant because when he tries to help in battle, things just go badly.
He's pretty good at building machines no-one in the villages cares about. Including a portable turret he uses to shoot down a Night Fury - a breed of dragon that no-one has ever seen, only viewed the effects of it's attacks.
The befriending he has is believable, and when he starts to fly, he actually goes through the process of invention for his equipment and figuring out exactly how to work with the dragon in flight - all while learning all about what dragons are really like.
This is definitely a great movie, at the least on of the best geek films of the year.
