Given Hideo Kojima's penchant for copious cut scenes, you'd think Metal Gear Solid was a natural for a silver screen adaptation. After all, most of the work has already been done, right? Wrong.
According to producer Mike De Luca, who'd told Collider a ways back that the movie was on track, the MGS flick is not simply hiding under a cardboard box, it's dead:
I don’t think it’s going to move forward because I got the sense that there may not be enough of a coordinated will at this point on the side of certain parties to see a movie get made.
What does that mean in English? Most likely, exactly what you think it does. Though we don't have the Japanese skinny from Kojima, De Luca told Collider that
T]he video game companies are very protective of their property and there are certain things a studio requires freedom-wise to market and distribute a movie effectively in a global marketplace and sometimes getting those two things to match up is really hard. And in the case of Metal Gear Solid, the agendas just….not because the parties weren’t amicable, it was just kind of impossible to get the agendas to match up.
Translation: Kojima was hardly anxious to hand his baby over to a bunch of clueless filmmakers without instructions on the feeding and care of stealthy assassins, and Sony/Konami saw little reason to risk the brand. The studios, who always seem to think they know better, but rarely do, were adamant that Solid Snake: The Musical was the way to go.
Okay, that last part's a total lie, but you get the point.
