Games have gotten lengthier bits of exposition over the past several years, and Jeffrey Kaplan thinks that methods should be used that are unique to the gaming medium.

GDC: 'Stop Writing Books in Our Games,' says Blizzard Developer
Speaking during a presentation at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), the now former World of Warcraft director Jeffrey Kaplan talked about Blizzard's flagship title during the "The Cruise Director of Azeroth" lecture. He spoke at length about the problems in certain World of Warcraft quests, and how Blizzard has subtlety tried to address them over time.
During the presentation, Kaplan noted that one of the major issues in many games is over-use of exposition. He did not exclude Blizzard from making this game storytelling sin.
"Basically, and I'm speaking to the Blizzard guys in the back: we need to stop writing a f***ing book in our game, because nobody wants to read it," he explained. "We need to deliver our story in a way that is uniquely video game. We need to engage our players in sort of an inspiring experience, and the sooner we accept that we are not Shakespeare, Scorsese, Tolstoy or the Beatles, the better off we are."
In a concession to the art of video game development, he added, "If it makes us feel better, Shakespeare couldn't 3D model his way out of a paper bag."[/QUOTE]
