The Once ler, originally a complete bastard who doesn't express remorse until it's far too late, is provided a more sympathetic portrayal where he's motivated by his abusive family (while functionally fulfilling the same role) to shift focus to a much less plausible villain. As a minor point, the Once ler briefly signals that environmental destruction is human nature, which, while I'd argue accurate, blurs the originally clear cut lines between nature and industry.
Personally I found making the Onceler sympathetic made the character stronger. Humanizing him made it clear that he was just an ordinary guy, that anyone could fall like he did. Because he didn't blame his family, he didn't try to justify himself, he accepted the fault. The story gave him every out to shift the blame and he still took it on himself.
I'm not a huge fan of the movie and the Mazda tie in was hilariously insulting but like Horton Hears a Who before it, it stumbled onto some really powerful moments entirely by accident.
