Top Ten Foods to Keep You Fit
Everybody has a list of what foods you should eat to keep you fit. Most of the lists contain the same foods, with a few variations. Here is my list of the top ten foods for keeping you healthy and fit:
1. Lemons
This one should come as no surprise. Lemons are full of Vitamin C, and the citric acid works both as a purifier and a preservative. Cut apples and pears turn brown if not coated with lemon juice, and tap water is somewhat purified by that ubiquitous slice of lemon.
2. Broccoli
Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable, and as such contains cancer-fighting compounds. Broccoli contains vitamins C, K, and the B vitamins to boost your health.
3. Dark chocolate
Who would have thought chocolate was good for you! Dark chocolate, with a cocoa rating of 70% or higher, can lower your blood pressure, and also is instrumental in fighting some diseases.
4. Potatoes
Potatoes don’t normally make a list of healthy foods, since they are a significant source of carbohydrates; however, potatoes are full of vitamins and minerals. If properly prepared, potatoes form an integral part of a healthy diet.
5. Salmon
This one’s a no-brainer. Salmon are full of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, and the acids are called essential because your body does not make them – it must get them from its diet. Omega-3s are essential to proper brain functioning, and are important in a host of other areas.
6. Walnuts
All nuts are healthy, but walnuts win the prize for having the most Omega-3s; this places the walnut at the top of the list for healthy foods.
7. Avocados
Also called alligator pears, avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, and contain several of the B vitamins, Vitamins C, E and K, folic acid, and potassium. Avocados are generally eaten raw, in either savory or sweet dishes. The most popular dish is Mexican guacamole, a dip of mashed avocados, salt, and lime juice. Other ingredients, such as onions, tomatoes and garlic are sometimes added. Avocados don’t cook well, although the Hass variety will stand cooking for a short period without becoming bitter.
8. Garlic
This one is also a no-brainer. Garlic has numerous documented benefits for your health; the most well-known one is lowering your blood pressure. Its use as an anti-vampiric is documented in fictional literature, but is not substantiated;however, if you meet a vampire it’s worth trying!
9. Spinach
Spinach is a nutrient-dense food, full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and flavonoids. It has cancer-fighting properties, as well as being an antioxidant. Spinach is readily available, relatively cheap and versatile.
10. Legumes (beans)
What’s not to love? Beans are high in proteins, fiber and antioxidants. They are plentiful and cheap; and function quite well as a substitute for meat proteins.
Everyone’s list is different; you have to decide which ten foods will work for you as the healthiest foods for your diet. Keep trying new foods and come up with your own top ten list, just for you!
