The Question

Although most adults are familiar with the word Testosterone, not everyone knows exactly what it is, or how it works. A frequently asked question is “where is Testosterone made in the body?” The intent of this article is to not only to answer that question, but to also provide you with an easy to understand approach as to what it does, and how it works within us.

The Answer

So where is Testosterone made in the body? The simple answer is that Testosterone is made in the sex organs of humans. In Men it is produced in the testis, and women manufacture it in the ovaries. Although Testosterone is a natural hormone found in both genders, males make far more of the chemical than females do. On average a man generates six to eight mgs per day, while a women tends to turn out twelve time less. Both sexes produce a small amount of the hormone in the adrenal gland.

This also brings up the question, where is Testosterone produced? It is regulated by both the endocrine system, specifically from the pituitary gland, and hypothalamus. As a person reaches puberty, and grows older, Testosterone production vastly increases. On the other hand, when a person reaches the latter stages of life, it significantly dwindles. For example, males produce the largest amount of the hormone between the ages of 21-40 years old.

Testosterone helps to form the gender of a baby that is in the womb. It also helps develop male features at that stage. From infancy to puberty, the precise function of the hormone is not know; however scientists believe that it is used in the brain to determine how masculine a person will be when fully developed. Testosterone is responsible for many of the effects that are considered cliché in regards to the puberty stage. For example, you can thank Testosterone for enlargement of the penis or clitoris, growth of pubic hair, oily skin, growth spurts, facial hair growth, frequency of erection, and an increased libido to name a few. The hormone functions the same way in adults as well.

The Rest Of The Story

Now that we have answered the question, where is Testosterone made in the body, the functions of the hormone need to be explained. There are two main purposes of Testosterone called the Anabolic, and Androgenic functions.

· The Anabolic functions of Testosterone help increase strength, stimulus of bone maturation and density, and muscle growth.

· The Androgenic functions of Testosterone help deepen the voice, growth of facial hair, maturation of sex organs, and male secondary sex distinctiveness.

Other functions of Testosterone include the following:

Mood: The Testosterone hormone is a large factor in calculating human behavior such as dominance and aggression. In addition it helps to increase self-esteem, and competitiveness.

Reproductive System: Testosterone helps form the male genitals within two months of conception. During puberty, the amount of production increases significantly, helping both the penis, and testicles to grow.

Energy: Researchers have linked a direct connection between the levels of Testosterone, and energy production for both men, and women. Higher amount of Testosterone equates to a far more active person than people with low levels of the hormone.

Sexuality: Men and women with higher levels of Testosterone are much more likely to have an increase in sexual desire over people with lower levels of the hormone.

In conclusion, Testosterone is a natural hormone contained in both men, and women. It has many important functions to the overall health of the human body. The amount of Testosterone our bodies produce helps to explain not only our behaviors, but also some of the physical issues that are affecting people’s daily lives.
