"Purchase and own, or purchase and license? You decide..."
By Hal Halpin
DC Universe Online made history, but probably not in the way that the publisher, Sony Online Entertainment, had hoped: with its release as a single-user title. The PSN code, which is distributed with each retail copy, provides the consumer with key access – not unlike computer games. Unlike PC games, the PlayStation 3 version of DC Universe Online was marketed and sold as a traditional console product. The distinction is important in that computer games are purchased and licensed, whereas console games are purchased and owned. The licensed games give consumers less rights related to what they can do with the product, who else can play it, how many times and on the number of devices it can be played. An owned title transfers ownership from the seller to the customer, allowing him/her to re-sell it, trade it, give it away, or share it with friends and family.
