Sony is deploying a small firmware update that it describes as a “minor security patch.” As usual - especially when dealing with security patch rollouts - Sony is not saying what this firmware update combats or implements. There have been a number of rumors claiming that Sony planned to use "security keys" to combat the jailbreaking of the PS3 facilitated by hackers earlier this month. Here is what Sony's Eric Lempel VP, Network Operations Americas, said on the PlayStation blog:
"A new PS3 system software update, v3.56, will be released soon. This is a minor update that adds a security patch."
Beyond that sparse information, we know very little about what the update accomplishes, but we expect reports to start rolling in if this update does what people claim it is supposed to do: implement security keys for specific games. We will keep you posted. Read More
