A hacker who goes by the nickname "Kakaroto" has created the world's first custom firmware for the PlayStation 3 using the recently leaked PlayStation 3 private root key, according to Thing.co.uk.
Kakaroto said that, due to "legal and copyright issues," he will not publicly release his own version of the firmware, but provides all of the tools needed for anyone with a bit of Linux skillz to create their own based on an official Sony firmware update.
The firmware simply adds an "Install Package Files" option to the console's XMB, according to reports.
"This is just the first attempt at custom firmware, and it only contains a minor modification to allow you to install pkg files directly," says Kakaroto. "Eventually we’ll get some more options added to it in the future. This is just starting to get interesting!"
No doubt, Sony is looking for ways to stop this firmware from ever being used. Read More
