The Obama administration says that it will continue to ramp up its anti-piracy and IP protection operations by shutting down websites that share copyrighted content, such as movies, games, and music. White House intellectual property czar Victoria Espinel said earlier this week the Internet community should "expect more" pre-emptive action against allegedly offending sites.
"We are going after the piraters and counterfeiters," Espinel said at a Brookings Institution conference on Internet policy." She added that intellectual property infringement poses a "direct threat" to consumers and costs jobs.
Espinel’s remarks follow the Justice Department's operation that saw the shutdown of more than 80 websites believed to be selling counterfeit goods, or sharing movies, music, games, and TV shows. The effort was timed for "Cyber Monday," and marked the second operation in its "Operation In Our Sites II" campaign.
