Speaking to Bloomberg yesterday, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello compared the idea of buying Rock Band maker Harmonix to "catching a falling knife." Parent company Viacom recently said that it wants to sell off its games unit, of which Harmonix is a core component. Sales of music-based games have been on the decline in recent years, which makes selling a company whose core business is developing those types of products a challenge.
Riccitiello said that, while buying the company makes sense in theory, it is not the "strategic direction" his company is going in.
"I’m sure some smart investor will buy the business feeling that they can catch a falling knife," he told Bloomberg, "but more people have been cut trying to catch falling knives than have benefitted from getting the timing exactly right."
