Fly Lab Studios' high seas MMO, Pirates of the Burning Sea, has gone free-to-play this week. While the company is still ironing out some technical issues and some adjustments to memberships, the game is mostly ready for prime time as a no-strings-attached free game.
According to this page, which details the differences between free and premium accounts, free players get two character slots per nation, two dockyard slots per character, and two economy slots per character. Free players can enhance their accounts by purchasing premium items and functions via the in game store.
A Captain's Club membership is available for $14.99 a month that offers upgrades, perks, additional content and much of what you'd have to purchase in the in-game store free of charge.
This is just another example that the entire MMO sector is shifting away from the subscription-based model towards micro-transactions.
