Video game hardware and software took a tumble in October, even as Sony and Microsoft released new hardware. According to retail sales data gathered by NPD Group, U.S. sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 4 percent to $1.07 billion, down from $1.11 billion in the same period a year ago. NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier said that the downturn could have been worse, if not for higher unit prices.

Hardware sales were down by 26 percent during October.

Take-Two Interactive's NBA 2K11 was the best-selling game of October, followed by Bethesda's Fallout: New Vegas, and EA's Medal of Honor. Frazier added that encouraging early sales for new motion-based controllers for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 could help offset weak sales during the holiday shopping season. We will see.
