Professors from the Harvard Business School have released a paper in which they examine whether or not platforms (such as smart phones, operating systems or video game consoles) should maximize the number of applications on a given system.
“When Does a Platform Crate Value by Limiting Choice” (PDF) was authored by Ramon Casadesus-Masanell and Hanna W. Halaburda and kicks off by stating, “Given the wealth of evidence suggesting that maximizing the number of applications available on a platform is a good idea, it is puzzling that firms such as Nintendo or Apple appear to have actively limited the number of application on their platforms.”
