You have to suspend expectations when reviewing a game like Ys Seven, because if you'd played the original PC Engine game you'd look at this new game and probably shake your head in disbelief. Falcom abandoned the game mechanics that made the first game such a hit many, many years ago. That fact in and of itself is pretty baffling.
I never played the PC Engine version, but I did play a later release on the Sega Master System and I fell in love. The first time I played it I thought the game was stupid because instead of swinging a sword or jumping into a combat screen to fight enemies on the field, you had to run into them with your sword like some kind of half-assed lancer. Doing it wrong - not lining up just the right way - usually resulted in a very instantaneous death. That might not sound all that fun, but once you understand the mechanics and start leveling up Ys proves to be a damned fine game.
