I really feel in my heart of hearts that Turbine's decision to make Lord of the Rings Online a free to play game was the smartest thing the company has done since it bought back the rights to Asheron's Call from Microsoft many moons ago. The game was doing well enough with a monthly subscription fee but opening it up to the masses for free and introducing an in-game store for extras was a stroke of genius. Turbine is smart for doing this because, I think, they see the writing on the wall when it comes to the MMO space. I predict that the game will swell in user ranks in a matter of months.
Players are willing to spend time in a free game world that has a proven track record and this is one of those franchises. Having played the game when it was not free I can attest to its level of quality and its ease of play.
