Sure, Kinect will help you play goofy Wii-too games on the Xbox 360, but a more practical application of the technology has nothing to do with the Xbox 360 at all. Several companies are already finding ways to use the Kinect motion sensing technology for more mainstream uses - most notably the company that created it for Microsoft.
That company, [URL=http://www.primesense.com/]PrimeSense[/URL], has signed deals to put the technology inside HTPCs by the end of 2010, and has inked a deal with at least one cable company to launch a gesture-controlled set top box by summer 2011. The technology being built into these devices will have a pair of 640 x 480 camera sensors to measure user position in 3D space, but it won't have the motorized tilting functions or voice recognition of Kinect because those ideas are Microsoft's.
