Remedy, whose resume includes Max Payne, May Payne 2, Death Rally - and most recently - Alan Wake, revealed that the game is inspired by a cult classic ABC television series. Speaking to the Winnipeg Free Press during a recent visit to Toronto, Remedy's Oskari Hakkinen said that the development team behind Alan Wake turned to popular culture for inspiration for everything from location to camera angles as a way to "accentuate the drama and the thriller moments." One of the key inspirations was the cult TV show Twin Peaks.

Of course another inspiration for the game was nature itself: the developers drove almost 5,000 kilometers in the Pacific Northwest and took more than 60,000 research photos to get the game's feel "just right."

All the hard work, inspiration from the real world and the world of the fantastic has obviously paid off for Remedy. And the game, in turn has inspired more art and content; Remedy is working on a book based on the game called Alan Wake and the first game add-on, "The Signal," will be available for download on Xbox Live July 28.
