The AMD Foundation has awarded a $35,000 grant to Schmahl Science Workshops. The grant from the world's second largest chip maker will be used to develop a sustainable fishing game that communicates the dangers of over fishing including its long-term effects on human survival. This is the fifth grant the AMD Foundation has awarded this year as part of the company's "Changing the Game" initiative and the first to a Silicon Valley (that’s in California if you didn’t know) area non-profit organization.
The "Sustainable Seafood" game design project will be designed and programmed using Flash or Facebook by middle school and high school students, and AMD promises to donate $25,000 for the purchase of 10 AMD-powered notebooks and software that will be used for the game development project.
Naturally those youngsters developing the game will have to learn about the effects of overfishing, biology and geography. In addition they will learn about game design, coding, navigation, content and strategies.
