If you need any further proof that video games are now part of the collective mainstream, then you need to look no further than the Cub Scouts of America. An organization that once focused solely on outdoor activities is now offering rewards for learning about and sharing video games. The popular youth group is now offering a Video Games Belt Loop and Video Games Pin to those youngsters willing to put the work into earning them.

To earn the belt loop cubs are required to complete three specific goals:

1. Learn about and explain why the ESRB ratings system is important

2. Create a schedule of chores, activities, homework and video gaming and stick to it

3. Learn to play a game approved by an adult (parent, teacher)

The Pin is much more complex reward to earn. To earn it Cub Scouts will have to complete ten steps - in addition to earning the belt loop first. These steps include comparing two game systems and writing about the differences, buying a game that is age appropriate, teaching someone to play a game, playing games with your family, comparison shopping for a game you want, etc.

Given the uptick of portable video game systems over the last decade, it is hard to imagine that games haven't been a secret part of the Cub Scouts experience for years anyway - despite parents and leaders in the organization (most likely) discouraging that kind of activity during troop events and gatherings. While that kind of discouragement is important, it is good to know that the Cub Scouts don’t view video games in a negative light, and see the value in them in the context of ratings and parental responsibility.
