For some, Apple's new iPad is much more than a web-browsing, book-reading, non-Flash movie watching luxury toy. It's also a handheld gaming device of the future with a 10" touchscreen display, network support and a gesture-controlled interface. All of that might sound really attractive to Nintendo, if only they'd thought of it first. As it is, Nintendo US boss Reggie Fils-Amie isn't buying the hype.
Using language that might seem ironic to some, coming as it does from a company that's been slapped more than twice for the "casual-ization" of gaming, Fils-Amie tells Kotaku that iPad gaming is little more than a fluff phenomenon:
If our games represent a range between snacks of entertainment and full meals, depending on the type of game, [Apple's] aren't even a mouthful, in terms of the the gaming experience you get.
Is this a case of the kettle calling the pot casual, or is Reggie right? His comments certainly sound like just the sort of criticism leveled at a certain white console four years ago, when it stole borrowed Apple's sleek, white product design to sell simple, intuitive fun to the masses. Maybe he's just sore that Super Monkey Ball has finally found its platonic ideal platform.
