In a [URL=http://www.geeksugar.com/Jake-Gyllenhaal-Interview-Prince-Persia-WonderCon-7996425]recent Wondercon interview[/URL] with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, it was revealed that he enjoyed playing [I]Metroid[/I] as a kid and thought "Zelda was dope". Although it might be slightly encouraging to some of us that Jake has actually played more than one video game, he admits to not really identifying with gamers in general.

My concern is that if the main actor playing the [I]Prince of Persia [/I]doesn't understand the culture behind why we do what we do as gamers, how can he be expected to portray a character on screen that was created for a video game?

Obviously, this could be seen as being a bit harsh on poor ol' Jake. Surely we don't expect every actor that takes on the lead role of a beloved video game franchise such as PoP to understand why we enjoyed the game and the character so much. Or do we?

I've never played a huge amount of Prince of Persia but what I have played I really enjoyed. I can easily see why a scriptwriter would find the character and the world of [I]Prince of Persia[/I] so attractive, especially when the Prince encounters his other self later on down the track in [I]The Warrior Within[/I]. It could make for some great story-telling.

The fact is we've seen a string of game-to-movie adaptations that had gamers wondering "WTF?!" many times over. Why should [I]Prince of Persia[/I] be any different? It remains to be seen just how well Jake will pull it off and to be fair, it isn't entirely up to him. Everyone involved in the process should really be looking at why so many other movies based on video games have failed to deliver. I don't think it's enough to create a script, call it "great", assemble a kick a** cast and crew and expect it will all work out.
