Gamers who play alot of online games, particularly shooters, will always debate the issue of lag, ping and latency. The fact of the matter is, skill in any game (especially if it's competitive) will matter to a degree but if you're at the mercy of a sub-par internet connection or poorly maintained online server, your full potential in the game will never be fully realised, not to mention the frustration that will eventually lead to the all too familiar 'slash ragequit' routine.

The issue is proving that lag is a factor in your abysmal scoreboard tally and that can be next to impossible to do unless you've found a way to measure it as you play. PC gamers have long been able to do this using third party software applications and in some cases, certain games provide the option to check lag/ping. On the PS3 or Xbox 360, it's not that easy to do (and if you've somehow found a way to do this, PLEASE let me know!)

I recently upgraded my internet connection to ADSL2. For those readers who are unfamiliar with the connectivity issues in New Zealand, connectivity can be a real problem - especially for gamers. Since upgrading my connection, my latency issues have drastically improved and my gaming experience all-round has been nothing short of awesome. To give you an indication of my plight, when I was playing Aion, I was receiving (on average) a ping of 700 - 800 milliseconds and I still continued to play the game for a year, even though I was clearly at a serious disadvantage. Now my ping to U.S. based servers registers at around the 100 - 150ms mark which is a considerable difference. To Australian based servers I average around 30 - 40 milliseconds which is incredibly good. What this means for me as a gamer is that I can actually react alot quicker to what is happening around me and the end result - a much more even footing in games with my opponents as well as a MUCH higher scoreboard tally at the end.
