While the name Steven DeKnight might not hold the same recognition of J.J. Abrams or Jerry Bruckheimer, chances are you’ve seen his work as producer/writer on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Smallville,” “Dollhouse” and now “Spartacus: Blood and Sand." DeKnight also happens to be a diehard gamer. Here he talks about his love of videogames and how they’ve influenced his latest television series, the Starz hit gladiator epic, “Spartacus,” in this exclusive interview.
What’s the most recent game that really stuck with you and why?
Well, I’m playing Modern Warfare 2 right now. That’s sticking with me much like Modern Warfare. I remember there’s a moment in the first Modern Warfare that made me cringe and cackle with mad glee that they went there. That’s when the German Shepherds attack you, and you’ve got to snap their necks. Which I thought was at once horrible, reprehensible, and there was also that, “Oh, my God. I can’t believe they did that.” Of course, there’s that infamous section in Modern Warfare 2 where we’re forced to make some hard decisions. That game’s really sticking with me at the moment.
We’re seeing a lot more TV shows like “CSI,” “Law and Order,” and “Ghost Whisperer” being turned into games. Do you think “Smallville” or “Dollhouse” would make a good game?
I actually think they would. I think “Smallville” would make a fantastic game. It’s always that bit of a problem in a game because for me, in a game, I want to play Superman. I’m not 100% sure I want to play Clark.read more
