Kay, got it from Amazon on Tuesday, and beat it earlier today. Only took about 6 to 8 hours. Everyone says the game is God of War... while I can't argue about the button mapping (I knew the controls without thinking about it) or the QTEs found in the game for bosses and events, the game did feel different to me. Perhaps it was the new story that it brought, and the hearkening of the poem from what I read it a few years ago... Similar to the reason I liked God of War in the first place (I love mythology). I'd say if you want a 3rd person beat 'em up that has a mixture of killing, puzzles, and amazing sound/environments... play this.
I wouldn't suggest buying it unless you absolutely need to play stuff that will soon be offered. There is prologue DLC coming soon, as well as a Create Your Own Challenge type of thing... this is the option that will incorporate multiplayer. Could the game be better? Absolutely. Did Visceral do an awesome job? Yes. For the first time in a long time (since Dead Space, also made by them) I wore headphones for the entire play through.
The one thing I believe Visceral does better than most modern designers is really pay attention to the sound in their games... The level of immersion is so amplified by this aspect alone... It's often talked about how music is nice, or ambient, voice acting is decent or bad... but no one ever talks about how the music enhances the game, gives that feeling of suspense, or burst of energy... a game that comes to mind when thinking of that is Shadow of the Colossus. But I digress... Unless you have something against this type of game, rent it for sure.
