I think I can finally take the leash off the controller when I play Bayonetta in 'Non-Stop Infinite Climax' mode; turns out, I probably don't have the brains for it.

In a recent study, researchers from Pitt, MIT and the University of Illinois were able to predict their subjects' success at videogames simply by measuring the volume of three key brain structures — the caudate nucleus, the putamen and the nucleus accumbens.

Previous research has shown that gamers with skillz outperform noobs on many basic measures of attention and perception, but other studies have found that training noobs often yields no measurable cognitive benefits.

These contradictory results suggest that pre-existing individual differences in the brain might predict variability in learning rates, the authors wrote in the journal Cerebral Cortex.

To explore that hypothesis, the team used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the size of brain structures in 39 subjects, each of whom had spent less than three hours a week playing games in the past two years. Participants were also asked to game up on one of two versions of a space shooter. One group was told to focus on high score while the other group were given shifting priorities, a form of "variable priority training," which is thought to mimic the kind of flexible decision-making that drives everyday life.

In both groups, subjects with larger nuclei accumbens scored better early in their 'training.' According to the researchers, this makes sense because the nucleus accumbens is part of the brain's reward center, and the pleasure of success is a powerful motivator.

Players with bigger caudate nuclei and putamen, meanwhile, beat the other participants on the variable priority exercises.
