O great internet, I need your help! I've registered for a youth volunteer exchange program that starts this fall. Unlike most such programs, half the program takes place in Canada and half overseas, and it will require cooperation between youths from both countries [I]in [/I]both countries. It's not just rich first world kids helping poor third world kids... it'll be a true cultural exchange, and I think we'll all be able to do a lot of good.
For the Canadian half, I'll be spending three months living with a host family and volunteering in Sooke, Canada (a little place on Vancouver Island, on the west coast) with a group of Canadians and Mozambicans, and then we'll all head over to Inhambane, Mozambique to volunteer there for the remaining three months of the exchange. I will be there during the hottest, wettest, and most malarial part of the year... should be interesting, to say the least.
So here's the thing: in order to participate in this program, I need to fundraise $2500 before the end of this month. I've already saved a little over half of it by working 35-40 hours a week at an absolutely [I]thrilling[/I] slightly-over-minimum-wage data entry job for the past few months. Unfortunately, this means that I still need to raise the rest of the money. You see where I'm going with this? :p
Of course, I wouldn't ask without offering something in return. It's not much, but I'd be happy to send postcards from Sooke and/or Mozambique to anyone who donates. Also, if I die of malaria or get eaten or something, [I]you [/I]might get to replace me as moderator! What better reason to send me to the third world? :D
