5 barriers to enjoying anime
Anime or even animation in general can be an acquired taste, there are certain barriers that keep most people away from it and I will try to describe them as best as I can and why they don’t affect me so much.
---Language---
Primarily language is the first and largest barrier, most people are not use to nor care to read while watching a film. Culture also can be a issue but I think it’s not as big of one as dubbing which is the next barrier, but for me language is not an issue I do like good subbing that tries to translate what is said without watering it down too much, information tends to be slowly digested in my brain anyway so English or Japanese’s or gibberish it’s all discombobulated in my head.
---Localization---
Localization tends to reduce the dialog and script to bear essence then they ad lib it to death to match mouth movements, this can make already watered down or Americanized scripts painfully bad then of course add bad or lack luster voice work and you have a good train wreck in the making. Unlike all the other barriers localization is grating to me few shows take the time to do it right and thus I would simply rather not be forced to deal with it at all.
---Fantastical Fiction---
The next barrier could well be placed above localization and that’s the high flatulent fiction that is used from fantasy to sci fi to anything in between you have strange and/or abstract worlds and characters which can easily turn many off, speaking of characters the next barrier is well characters or more precisely minors, minors are the main stay or fodder of anime and the next barrier. I take fiction like language it all gets discombobulated in my head and I take them as they are most of the time, sometimes tho a show will have the wrong mix of story/character and I am just not enthralled by it.
---“Minor Character’s” ---
Minors are the main character type combine this with annoying personalities and odd environments and fiction you have a quickening of disdain and dismissal of it as being childish or silly. But for me characters are ageless and loli/pedo jokes aside characters like fiction get lost in my head and I take them for whatever they are rather than try and nitpick them to death though sometimes it cannot be avoided….
---Culture---
Culture is the last barrier a lot of myths and generic settings use a lot of Asian cultures and myths sublimely or not mixed into with more modern/western themes. This can be confusing to some or just a turn off to others. I find culture to be the random things we do as we humans gather together to eke out an existence as a community so I either can dismiss it there as or enjoy the nuances there of, either way it just adds more flavor and/or depth .
---Disbelief of enjoyment---
Anime can be enjoyed if you are equipped with a good sense of humor an active imagination and the ability to dismiss things for the sake of enjoying what you watch, it’s to be said suspension of disbelief is a double edge sword if you can like anything then the worst kind of crap will be shoveled out by the industry if most people can like anything that is. If you have a moderate suspension of disbelief you can cheery pick what you like while avoiding the really bad stuff and in a sense make the industry better buy not buying into to anything they poo out…
But in the end we all have limits on what we enjoy and what kinds of entertainment we are more tolerant too. For me animation and games I have a much lower tolerance for bad writing and dialog than film or TV.[/QUOTE]
