Or rather not buying FEAR 2 paid for two years of dues here :)
I'm a chemist by trade, a dad and husband by choice, and a consumer of entertainment products who's more than a little jaded with the status quo. I figured it was worth the yearly dues to do my little bit to try and change things.
I am sick and tired of overreaching DRM in electronic goods, asinine laws like the DMCA making traditional fair use illegal (I can't rip and recode a DVD I own...really?!), and schemes like Steam effectively eliminating the 2nd hand market for games (thus violating the spirit of the 1st sale doctrine US citizens have enjoyed being protected by for years).
I am a reasonable and responsible person. I pay for the IP I enjoy and respect the rights of IP owners to fairly make a profit from the fruits of their labors. I however expect to be given the courtesy of not being assumed a criminal, the right to use products I own in the way I see fit, and not have well established consumer rights taken away from me just because the digital tools are available to do so.
P.S. The comment about FEAR 2 is because FEAR 2 is only available through Steam, and when you register the game it is forever tied to your Steam account. This violates the spirit of the 1st sale doctrine and I refuse to support Warner Bros Entertainment's business if this is how they treat their customers. I would love to buy the game, play it, and resell it later on; but the DRM included with FEAR 2 makes this impossible. Therefore, the $40-$50 I would've paid for FEAR 2 just bought me a couple of years supporting the ECA in my mind. I'll continue to support the ECA provided they continue to make a best effort in preventing such anti-consumer behavior.
