The Sierra Club recently spoke about proposing a "couch potato" tax in New Mexico. The tax would go to help fund programs that would encourage families to go out hiking. Nobody would be against the idea of a program like that. The problem is that it's insane to put that burden on gamers in particular with no thought to putting a tax on other forms of entertainment.

I sent an email asking the ECA what they thought of the proposed tax and here is what they said:

The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) is opposed to the
legislation proposed by the New Mexico Sierra Club. It's
unconstitutional to target video games with a special tax that would
unduly burden gamers, leaving out other forms of entertainment media
like movies, music and books. This proposed tax would also stifle trade
and disproportionately impact generations X and Y, who are increasingly
becoming more politically aware and vocal.

And that's why they are the professionals. As more politicians and groups try to tax video games because they see the earning potential, we have to make sure we stay active and organized.
