MUTANT SPUD is my gamertag, I'm a 40 year old gamer/ husband/ parent/ businessman from Melbourne Australia. I worry a lot about civil liberties, about free speech and access to information, about the role of technology in our lives and of course its impact on my children. My main concern at this point in time stems from my experiences online, in political forums, social networking and gaming which of late have been overwhelmingly negative. To elaborate, I'm concerned that parents are by and large making bad choices in giving their young children and teenagers unsupervised access to information technology. I'm a heavy user of the internet and Xbox live and like most people on this board (I'm assuming) I can give a litany of examples of the risks young people face in cyberspace, from the 4 year old online in COD4 at 1 in the morning, to the 14 and 15 year olds being groomed by Neo Nazis and Communists on their boards. Given that in my country we don't have a guaranteed right of free speech (its said to be implied), and highly concentrated media ownership the internet is a vital tool that we need to protect. Our government, and certain conservative groups are already making noises about internet censorship, usually on the grounds of national security or protecting young people from porn and so called Hate sites. I don't accept that the government has any right to comment what I or my children view, thats up to my wife and I. I'm hoping, by joining this board to learn strategies for helping my fellow parents deal with this rapidly evolving digital world
