[B]How do I become a game producer?[/B]

There's no clear path that producers have taken to get to that point. Some come from programming or lead artist roles, others come from QA (Quality Assurance/Testing) positions and move up through the ranks.

[B]What skills does a producer need?[/B]

To make it as a good producer, you've got to be able to communicate well with artists and programmers. Conflict management, scheduling, and team leadership skills are all important. You straddle the line between the "creatives" (artists and programmers) and the "suits" (upper management, marketing, PR, etc.). A business management degree is helpful, and any programming or art background will also aid you in effectively communicating with the team.

[B]What does a producer do?[/B]

A producer organizes everyone to make sure that items are done in a timely manner, and coordinates tasks so the team works effectively together. Anything that isn't a team member's job, falls under the responsibility of the producer. Need to hire another team member? Producer's job. Need some temp sound effects? Producer's job. Need help laying out levels? Producer's job. Need fresh coffee? Producer's job. An argument needs a final answer? Producer's job.
