Story Highlights
• NASA working to address thorny issues as it prepares for mission to Mars
• Issues: How to dispose of a dead body, how to deal with a critically ill astronaut
• Sexual desire among astronauts still too taboo for space agency to address
• NASA considering genetic screening in choosing crews
And the issues don't end there:
"When should the plug be pulled on a critically ill astronaut who is using up precious oxygen and endangering the rest of the crew?"
"...the number of hours crew members should work each week "
These are definitely issues that should be addressed... or should they? Does the spacecraft have to follow the laws of the country that launches the spacecraft? Or does it enter International or Neutral territory once it reaches a certain distance from Earth? Should those onboard the spacecraft be left to making their own decisions, or should each and every situation receive a policy and procedure? And what should happen if a situation arises that isn't covered? Do they HAVE to phone home for direction?
