View Full Version : RAM problems?

I downloaded Windows Memory Diagnostic, burned to bootable CD, and ran the program after rebooting.
All tests are successful EXCEPT Stride6 cache enabled (cache disabled runs successfully). The problem is, it doesn't give an error, the computer instead freezes. Not always at the exact same moment in the test run.
Google Search indicates that Stride6 errors indicate a stick problem. Of course, since the computer freezes, there's no way to tell which stick is the problem.
The big question I have before going out to buy new memory is:
If testing with cache disabled is successful, is the fact that it freezes with cache enabled a sign of something other than a RAM problem? Again, all other tests, cache enabled and disabled, are successful.
Thanks in advance.

DDR dose not need to be run in pairs remove each stick and test them sepreately.
On some rare configurations (like mine) it only wants to run with 2 sticks.
this is the program you want to sue
http://www.memtest.org/
even if you are happy with MS's version you still need to run a 4 or 5 hour test to let the ram get hot in their normal environment that is the stress test to beat.
Also lowering the speed on the ramm could help.
stride 2 is linked to CPU L2 cache so its either bad mobo or bad CPU.
the more oddiesist pop up the more it sounds like a mobo problem.
what was your mobo I could find a replacement for it for under 60.
with AGP and the ramm you use so you don't have to waste money on more than 1 thing.

Ran memtest for 3 hours, 3 passes, no errors, no freezes.
I only did the Windows memory diagnostic because it was the first "memory diagnostic" that came up on Google Search.
My motherboard is actually a MiniAtX Form. I did a search some time back for the system itself and thought someone indicated it was an ATX. But on deeper searching, discovered it is a MiniATX, which makes looking for replacements easier as the MiniATX seems to be more common. It also only has 2 memory slots, and only one is used apparently.
Visually, I couldn't tell different when I've opened the case because I don't usually look at the memory slots and the bloody case is cram full (which probably explains the problems eMachines have with heat, though SpeedFan says heat is fairly decent).
The exact motherboard I have discovered is this one:
Mfr Part Number: 100452
SKU: MBEM100452AM
For use with AMD Duron/Athlon/AthlonXP processors up to 3000+
Form Factor: miniATX (9.6" x 9.0")
Chipset: VIA KM400, VIA VT8235CE
FSB: 200/266/333 MHz
Memory: 2 DIMM slots DDR 200/266/333 SDRAM for max 2 GB
Audio: AC97 audio subsystem in VIA VT8235CE supporting 5.1 channels
Video: 1 32-bit AGP 8x slot with dedicated 66/133 MHz path to system memory
Onboard I/O Connectors:
1 PS/2 mouse and 1 keyboard connector
1 Audio connector (line-in, line-out, mic-in)
1 COM port
1 VGA port
1 Parallel port
1 RJ-45 port
4 USB 2.0 ports
2 IEEE 1394 VIA6307 ports (optional)
Support for 8 USB 2.0 ports
Onboard IDE: 2 dual-channel Enhanced Bus Master IDE connectors (UltraDMA/33/66/100/133)
Expansion slots: 1 AGP 8x slot, 3 PCI slots
BIOS: ACPI, APM, DMI, SMBIOS, PnP, USB, PC99, PC2001
The network port is fried. Damaged by a storm. But the video problems precede that storm, so I don't think that was the cause of my video problems.
Do you know of a comparible CPU diagnostic program that I can test the CPU and cache in the same manner as I did with the memory?
Tax time isn't til the end of January. So I have time to poke around some more. Just replacing the memory would be a decent amount, but as you say, if the cache is at fault, then it might be CPU/motherboard problems. Nothing wrong with checking all my options and needs.
Thanks in advance.

damn I have a abit board here with a XP 3000 in it *L*
I ahve another XP CPU a 1.4Mhz I think
network ports are fickle and sometimes can easily die.
I dont know of any CPU diagnosing stuff ><
micro ATX with 754 socket pre spermon socket(spermon is the mid way between ADM duron/althon XP and ADM 64)
heres what newegg has
