TIME magazine rounds up the five "phenomena" on the year that captivated the media momentarily before ultimately going bust on the hype. The PS3 shares the not-so spotlight next to Bode Miller, Studio 60, Fox TV's canceled If I Did It program, and Snakes on a Plane as the year's biggest letdowns according to the magazine.
From the article's sub-section entitled HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD in video games: "The PS3 is hideously expensive--it goes for up to $600--and Sony manufactured only a piddling few hundred thousand for the U.S., fewer for Japan. Plus it's hard to write games for; the launch titles were lame. You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii." Sony would have to try really hard to get anymore negative press for the PS3, not to mention other facets of the company's endeavors. Can an electronics brotha get a break? Maybe a slight one if we didn't run this story...
Am I wrong for being happy about this?
****! This might be in the wrong place.:o

If the PS3 is as much a letdown as Snakes on a Plane was, this means it was SUCH a letdown it's one of three movies I went to see this summer and the only one I PLANNED to see and would buy the DVD of.
So yeah... letdown. PS3 launch might sucks, but let's face it: Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, White Knight Story... None of that will hit la boite en X qui fait des 360 or the GimmickII (who will most likely do EXACTLY what the NGC did in the past (see this weeks VGCats for details)). Get me an actual good Tactical RPG/Adventure on the 360 and I might get it.
And no, Blue Dragon (or whatever that's called) is not a next-generation RPG. It's a ****ing Gamecube game ported on 360.

Not at all., Sony deserves a reality check.

Yes, they do. But let's face it: most of us WILL buy a PS3 at some point to play the games that will be exclusive on it (unlike the 360 release that get released for PC 3 months later (if that)).
What they need is a reality check, not outright bashing.
And they're still the only company to advertise GIANT ENEMY CRABS that you can flip-over with REAL TIME WEAPON CHANGING for MASSIVE DAMAGE.
Also, RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACER!

Eh. All of us here are disappointed about the PS3. I had my heart set on one for this year, even the price did not deter me. But to me, the launch titles are not worth it, the graphics are not up to par yet, and I don't want to get robbed/shot.
But that is not stopping quite a number of people from buying it at Walmart every 10 min. An announcement was made over the speakers stating how many PS3's were left. They are continuously selling out. It is obvious that the general population that doesn't get on game sites, doesn't subscribe to a game magazine, & does not care if the system is two to three hundred dollars more, is buying up the PS3.
Bad press be damned. If I listened to the press all the time, I wouldn't go outside for fear of contamination of everything. I say, if you have the money and the ability, and you don't care that you have to wait until next year for good games, then buy one.

What sucks the most is that I thought the PS3 would NOT be region-coded, so I could get japanese PS2 games for it while I waited for good games to come out (read Super Robot Wars here).
Sucks that they just changed the region coding instead.

Also sucks they went with blu-ray. If you make a game that fills a blu-ray you'll have no hope of making a profit until late next year or so because of the manini amount made/sold.
Their advertising sucks out loud tho.
Old psp ads: dems sum tasty psps I tells ya! Get off da stage micheal richards u a cracker!
New psp ads: psp will halp u meet girls and then you can stick it in pooper.
Olde ps3 ads: demon baby liek ps3.
New ps3 ads: here's a rabbit with playstation 3 logo over its eyes. Buy eeeeeeeeet.
Sony will still sell a hell of a lot of ps2 games for a long time to come.

God of War 2 being a prime example of the games still coming to the system. PS2 I mean.
The next gen has just started.
Calling a winner and loser so early is stupid.
And yes, the lauch titles do suck, but like Silver said, there are a lot of exlusive games coming out that'll be incentive for people to buy.
Plus, Time also said that the PS2 would be a failure.

I am waiting to get my PS3 until the launch for Assassin's Creed gets closer. That way I am not making myself go through waiting hell until the game launches. Though I need to get it before March, I am getting my brother RE5 for his 18th Birthday. Happy Birthday now go kill some Zombies.

DMC4 or FFXIII (one of'em, at least) or White Knight Story is what's going to make me buy a PS3.
And I'm also hoping for the announcement of a new Shadow Hearts or Shin Megami Tensei game for any of the current gen consoles.

DId they change the regioning on it?
Last time I checked its crossed regioned
USA and JAPAN fully work with each other
Euro will run USA and Japanese games but I think they implemented a new region flag for BR movies thus making the movie side Euro only.

Assasin's Creed has made a covenant with Microsoft to release it on 360 as well.
According to a service that tracks how long in demand items stay in stock, the ps3 isn't moving as fast as the 360 did. Of course, we're talking about the difference between an item selling in 2 hours and an item selling in 12 hours lol.

I think when you say "The next generation starts when we say so", you should expect this to happen.

Here's my 2 cents on this whole thing: It is far too early to go saying that any one system is a massive success or failure.

and heres my take on it
WII 50% change to be the highest seller
PS3 40% change of being the highest seller
360 10% changes to of being the highest seller
WII 60% change to be the 2nd highest seller
PS3 20% change of being the 2nd highest seller
360 30% changes of being the highest seller
I don't like the numbers but you get the point, once the 2nd PS3 wave hits gamers should eat them up like hot cakes if not the WII wins.
the main reason the WII and the PS3 will trump the 360 is world wide the 360 only has the US and Europe ,the other will do better because of japan sales and support..
all in all its more like a 3 way tie than anything else unless gamers revolt on sony....and sadly thats not going to happen.....

The average HC gamer will have all three at some point.
The guy who plays mostly sports games will get the cheapest one that plays Madden and GTA.
Parents will buy the Wii for their kids unless the brats demand a different system.
360 gets the world. Wii gets Japan, but only because non-Japanese consoles never sell there.

All three sold out at launch in the states. The only one that failed in Japan was the 360. Because it generally doesn't have the titles they buy.

I think Microsoft was aiming to fix that. I know Blue Dragon is coming from Square Enix next year.

and why is that so? because the mass of jap devs are on the PS3/WII bandwagon and don't want to fool with the 360 this hurts the 360 in more ways just than not selling well in japan..

That and MS didn't impress anybody over there because they didn't have any titles that were must-haves to the japanese.

True, while Nintendo and Square have made plans for the next Dragon Quest to be DS only, and since Japan has a national law forbidding Dragon Quest to be released on a week day, smart move.
