NEW YORK (AP) -- More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past.

"This is reality-check research," said the study's author, Lawrence Finer. "Premarital sex is normal behavior for the vast majority of Americans, and has been for decades."

Finer is a research director at the Guttmacher Institute, a private New York-based think tank that studies sexual and reproductive issues and which disagrees with government-funded programs that rely primarily on abstinence-only teachings. The study, released Tuesday, appears in the new issue of Public Health Reports.

The study, examining how sexual behavior before marriage has changed over time, was based on interviews conducted with more than 38,000 people -- about 33,000 of them women -- in 1982, 1988, 1995 and 2002 for the federal National Survey of Family Growth. According to Finer's analysis, 99 percent of the respondents had had sex by age 44, and 95 percent had done so before marriage.

Even among a subgroup of those who abstained from sex until at least age 20, four-fifths had had premarital sex by age 44, the study found.

Finer said the likelihood of Americans having sex before marriage has remained stable since the 1950s, though people now wait longer to get married and thus are sexually active as singles for extensive periods.

The study found women virtually as likely as men to engage in premarital sex, even those born decades ago. Among women born between 1950 and 1978, at least 91 percent had had premarital sex by age 30, he said, while among those born in the 1940s, 88 percent had done so by age 44.

"The data clearly show that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which calls into question the federal government's funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage programs for 12- to 29-year-olds," Finer said.

Under the Bush administration, such programs have received hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding.

"It would be more effective," Finer said, "to provide young people with the skills and information they need to be safe once they become sexually active -- which nearly everyone eventually will."

Wade Horn, assistant secretary for children and families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, defended the abstinence-only approach for teenagers.

"One of its values is to help young people delay the onset of sexual activity," he said. "The longer one delays, the fewer lifetime sex partners they have, and the less the risk of contracting sexually transmitted disease."

He insisted there was no federal mission against premarital sex among adults.

"Absolutely not," Horn said. "The Bush administration does not believe the government should be regulating or stigmatizing the behavior of adults."

Horn said he found the high percentages of premarital sex cited in the study to be plausible, and expressed hope that society would not look askance at the small minority that chooses to remain abstinent before marriage.

However, Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America, a conservative group which strongly supports abstinence-only education, said she was skeptical of the findings.

"Any time I see numbers that high, I'm a little suspicious," she said. "The numbers are too pat."

Honestly I thought it would be a higher percentage than 95 but meh, it still destroys any argument that the abstinence-only **** works to stop teens from having sex. Teens will have sex, no stopping that from happening, but I would think teaching them safe sex methods would be better than the "If you have sex you will get pregnant and die" teaching they have now.

"It would be more effective," Finer said, "to provide young people with the skills and information they need to be safe once they become sexually active -- which nearly everyone eventually will."

Here is what an open minded person thinks.

You dumbass just because you tell someone, especially a teen not to do something doesn't mean they will listen. They are going to have sex, and your method of teaching puts them in harms way more than teaching them safe sex would. Especially if you are concerned with STDs.

He insisted there was no federal mission against premarital sex among adults.

"Absolutely not," Horn said. "The Bush administration does not believe the government should be regulating or stigmatizing the behavior of adults."

Not only are you a dumbass you are Mr. Horn you are also a liar, or a fool for believing that. If that is truly the case I would like to bring up the issue of Gay Marriage, if they really believe what you are saying then why would they want to make it illegal, seems like that is a form of regulation to me.

However, Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America, a conservative group which strongly supports abstinence-only education, said she was skeptical of the findings.

"Any time I see numbers that high, I'm a little suspicious," she said. "The numbers are too pat."

No you only are suspicious when the numbers are against what your simple little mind believes. If the numbers supported what you wanted you would be shouting it from the rooftops. And being someone who is "Concerned for America" you would think you would want a young teen girl to know about safe sex options so when your failure of abstinence only teachings fail she knows how to protect herself from STDs and pregnancy.

Actually, it's been found that those who make a public decision to stay chaste will have sex within a year of the promise.

This whole thing reminds me of a study done that proved the reason why men are more likely to cheat is due to a primal urge to propagate the species and impregnate as many females as possible.

All I have to say to that study and this one is.....Duh!!!

"Study shows humans like to have sex because it's pleasurable. Also, the study shows they like other things like EATING (which also procures pleasure), playing with pets (which is, according to some people, "really fun") and listening to people making stupid studies (quote: "It's so retarded when they do that I can't stop laughing!").

"Some people actually believe that this proves that human beings like to have fun," said Rev. Justin Beaucave. "But this is not the truth, because I can assure you people prefer living without pleasure. I suspect those who made that survey had a liberal bias." Cap'ain Jack Sperro, of the Pastafarian Church of his Noodly Return, said in response to this "ARRRRRRRRRR! IT'S DRIVIN' ME NUTS!", which many understood as his approval of this study, while other believed he wanted to drink more rum.

More on this AMAZING survey at seven."

There's also the biological proof that women were the ones supposed to get multiple service:
The average guy peaks at 5 minutes, while the average women does at 30.
The hormones released at climax put a guy to sleep, but make the female more alert.
The male parts sweep out material that isn't theirs.
Females are capable of multiple repeated climaxes, while men are limited to one.

It's nice to to have common sense backed up by facts for those lacking in common sense. Also, conservatives have this notion that once upon a time, teens didn't have sex or do drugs and respected their elders. It's fun to squash that illusion.

I can add a counter argument to this data from personal experience, but it might be too much info for some people, and since it said average I guess one person's data doesn't do much. Oh we I will say this does not apply to me :D .

Note that I used the term average in that, and described general basics of biology. Because that average is short for me.

I would like someone to do a study of pregnancy rates between schools with abstinence-only sex ed and schools who use other methods. My high school used the abstinence-only method, and there would be at least ten girls at a given time who were pregnant.

Well I think you're talking about biologically anyways. After 5 minutes you can just think about Gwen Stephani and that will delay the inevitable for at least an hour.

Thats mostly true altho there are ways around it without meds just some exercises over a year or so but most studies I have seen tie ejaculation with orgasming for males, dosent quite work like that, also I notice a good to great orgasm boosts my alertness and not drains it while most bad to good drain me so.

This reminds me; a while back, when I was doing the obligatory sex-ed in health class, I almost busted out laughing several times solely for the fact that the teacher and textbook and whatnot were coming RIGHT OUT and saying that if you ever, under any circumstances, have sex with ANYONE before you're married, then there's a 110% guarantee that you'll get an STD.... And then, after you're married, you're completely immune to STDs for the rest of your life.

The difference between the 50s and 90s:

Little girl goes to police and says the school janitor molested her.

1950:

Police: is he black? If so, we'll hang him. Otherwise, gtfo you lying hussy!

1990:

Police: ok we'll look into it right after we get done beating this black guy.

Etc etc. Same ****, it's just that stuff is more out in the open these days.

My theorum is that women are selecting men who last longer and stay awake afterwards. This is the reason so many on here are saying this isn't applying to them.
