After reading the experience Crytek endured I wondered if some specific form of haterd was being used. I could not find a word for someone who hates another based on the games/activities they partiscipate in. Is there such a word that would refer gamer discrimination?
Have any of you heard of the Jedi religion attempt on the census?

I wonder if gamers could fill out some part of the census to get some numbers that state how many gamers there are.

Is this the right thread? If not just delete what I say :D
technically there is no name for gamer descrimination though of course Pixelante was intriduced by the unholy father in the early days of the debate. Of course that has now been taken up as a name of pride so I don't know if it counts...
As for the census I of course know all about this having considered putting it down on my own form when it was done in the UK (alas I wimped out and put none)! If you examine the results of the census you'll find that according to it Jedi is the 4th greatest religion in the UK defeating Sikh's, Judaism and Buddhism...of course thats only on the census and if you factor out the numbers who said none or chose not to respond.

Maybe regconition is one of the first steps we need to identify ourselves. I wonder who decides all the words in the dictionary? Maybe we need to talk to those people. I would think just for the sake of understanding they would listen. If there is absolutly no word then gamers NEED one. We need to be able to describe situations that currently can not be easly expressed in words...

Problem is gaming is our hobby not our belief. You can call a trainspotter a pathetic waste of space but you can't call a Muslim a psycopath without being threatened with understandable legal action or reproach.

Well, using terms like racism and sexism as a base, the best term for gamer discrimination would be hobbyism, I suppose.

Bigotry against voluntarily chosen differences is still bigotry.
Doesn't matter if it's bigotry against people who have large amounts of tattoos, like extreme hard rock/metal music or hardcore rap, choose a religion (even one that is publically defined as a "cult" by the "accepted" religions), people who choose to have lots of piercings, people who collect large varieties of weapons (knives, swords, various guns, etc), people who choose to focus their efforts on mental specialties versus physcial specialties (or even vice versa), people who've chosen to never have sex or people who've chosen to have sex whenever they want, people who choose to be nudists, people who choose to read or watch adult media, people who choose to PARTICIPATE in adult media or even be a part of adult jobs (strippers, prostitutes, escorts, etc), and so on and so on.
Some may think of it as PC out of control. But in the end, bigotry is bigotry and it's wrong no matter who the victim is and no matter who the attacker is.
I once pointed out that as a community, the gamer community would almost need to fight for Civil Rights but only one person, at the time, was using the type of offensive bigoted language and threats to violate the rights of those in the community towards those in the community that is generally used against other victims of bigots. But because, at the time, it was only the one person, I would have seemed odd for us to do so. Now, with this explosion of bigotry spreading in such a manner around the globe, I see no difference in fighting for Human and Civil Rights protections the same and many other groups demand.
Yes, I am being serious. Religion may be a belief, but it is a CHOICE. A person cannot change who they are born as, or if they can, they should not be FORCED to change because of other individual's bigotry and ignorance. (I said it that way because, though it would have been true that we couldn't change our gender a century ago (or whenever sex change operations began), we can now.)
So, is there a word for discrimination against gamers? Yes.
It's called bigotry. The same as it is in ANY case of discrimination. Yes, I know what you meant. But we should turn the tables once and for all. Being a bigot should be the stigma. Not being a gamer, or homosexual, or being of a particular religion, or not being of any religion, or of a race, or a culture, or a gender, or any number of other groups people are segregated into.
Bigotry should be the one and only stigma in society.

So Jack Thompson is like David Duke then. I agree, but there should be a limit on such things. No fursuits or starfleet uniforms at the office. Except on fursuit friday or starfleet saturday.

Those days would be kinda neat.
And hey, alot of that is just common sense, which sadly isn't common at all.

His attempts to pass laws that dictate to parents what is or is not appropriate for their children and attempts to ban specific video games, then I'd equate him to Fidel Castro.
His insults towards gamers (talking about gamers being unintelligent, on drugs, that our frontal lobes are damaged, etc etc), that's more along the lines of David Duke and others who say "people (of this group or that group) are inferior to the rest of us because <fill in the blank>".
Now, if his entire argument were religious founded, which it isn't entirely, though religion does play a part in his rantings, then I'd equate him to Fred Phelps and the like. You know, if he was always saying "God says video gamers are sinners and will burn in hell because of their anti-Christian ways". That sort of thing. But he doesn't. He tries to encourage others by envoking the name of God as being on his side, but not saying that God told him gamers were Satan's pawns and it's in the Bible that gamers are bad or some such nonsense. He just twists some religious arguments for his purpose. Like the times he said the game industry and gamers were "mental child molestors" just so he could use that scripture which advocated murder. The one that he used on stopkill.com and also sent to Senator Liberman (sp?) in one of the old emails that he posted last year.
And as much as I like Star Trek, even I wouldn't be so silly as to wear a Next Gen uniform to work.... or court (that was so rediculous).
Although, I will enjoy next Friday. Next Friday, we can come in ultra-casual clothes (I forget what they're calling it). As ultra-casual as PJs....
And I'm the only male in the department. :D
The only downside is they decreed no see thru nighties. :(

I suppose 'proper PC' would be the fact that while people cannot dress up in Furry Suits or Star Trek Uniforms at work, it should be no-ones business what they do for leisure as long as it hurts no-one else. And, despite what people would have the Media believe, gaming hurts nobody, and, this is important, there is no higher percentage of 'dedicated' gamers who commit crimes than the percentage of D&Ders, Footballers, LARPers, Fishermen or any other kind of hobbyists. A criminal is a person, not their pastimes.
People could argue that you do not have to be a Christian, you can choose to be an Atheist, so being Christian is as much a hobby as a belief, you get involved, you discuss the Bible with your friends, much as Gamers discuss games with theirs. Indeed, the whole Constitution basically says, 'You don't have to be anything but a good American, that is all we demand of you.'.

I'm sorry, but this bears quoting in full.
Do you mind if I quote you in papers and persuasive essays? Can I get a full name?

We don't really need yet another PC "i'm a victim" word for gamers. Bigotry and discrimination are really the only words needed.

Bigotry against voluntarily chosen differences is still bigotry.
But sometimes socially correct. For instance, bestiality is a voluntary activity, and so is being a drug addict. People can argue thier points on that as well, but as a society (here in the U.S.), we've decided that there is a point where you can love an animal too much, and that being strung out on Heroin is not acceptable.
People could argue that you do not have to be a Christian, you can choose to be an Atheist, so being Christian is as much a hobby as a belief, you get involved, you discuss the Bible with your friends, much as Gamers discuss games with theirs.
There is a difference though, and I know many of you can notice it right away. A religion is a core of ethical values; in other words, people use their religion as a base, with their moral convictions built around their religious beliefs. We do not (I hope many of you don't!) use video games as the core of our beliefs regarding our existence. If you're like me, you play video games for entertainment, just like any other hobby.
I mean this with the fullest respect torwards the members of GP, some of you behave as if video games were your religion. I know it isn't, and I know you're just passionate about your hobby, but as a "community" we sometimes get carried away with our "struggle against an unjust bigorty". I call myself a "video gamer" to denote what I do, not who I am. Since video games do not dictate the core of my ethical values, my morals do not stem from (and therefore are not affected by) video games. Every time we treat video games like a religion, it opens to door to people like JT; and I would have to agree with him fully if someone were to indicate to me that they use GTA as a moral base.
In my opinion, the best way to counter the bigotry is to take away its importance. Make video games appear to society as just another hobby, rather than a lifestyle. If someone says to me, "He's a Christian," then I know something about that person's moral foundation (assuming he is, in fact, a practicing Christian). If someone says to me, "He's a gamer," it tells me nothing. THAT is the message we need to send to folk.
