Just finished it last night, and found it to be an intriguing story with a decent, though repetitive, battle system.

yea the combat system is reptitive but leaps and bounds ahead of what the original game was. It'll get better though when they add 3rd form in Volume 2 and Xth form in Volume 3. The story is only going to get better, i've seen some volume 2 storyline stuff and OMG. You got to appreciate the story of .hack though, which is argueably its strongest attribute and the music.
A few tips in Volume 1 though. First go to a field area (has to be a field, none of the dungeons) and clear out the area of all monsters, then set your controller down and leave for 10 minutes. Make sure NOTHING even breaths on the controller when you leave it cause it needs to sit idle for a full 10 minutes. Come back after 10 minutes has passed, 15 minutes to be safe, and then check around all the portals. When you get near the thing that appears after your 10 minute away time, a red arrow should appear pointing in the direction he is in (like i said check the portals, he hangs around those) and quickly follow that arrow till you hear creepy stalker music, you'll see a kinda dark looking Haseo clone, engage it and kill it. This is the Doppleganger and if you've been using the strategy guide, it makes no mention of this thing and its rather tough since it always sits 8 levels above you no matter what time you face it. You get a useless item for Volume 1, BUT rumors say that it turns into a pretty nice weapon for Volume 2
Also make sure you complete the Lord Cerrunos quest. I beat the game personally at 20 hours, but between all the other things i'm trying to complete (ryu books and mecha grunty/lucky animal quests) i've put in roughly 40 hours.

Same here, I have an incentive to. I am trying to unlock all the movies for the End of the World Cd that came with the game so the Book of 1000 is my main focus right now

The Terminal disk only has 2 files that unlocks for Volume 1, which kinda sucked but probably cause any more would spoil most of the story. Plus not everyone got the special edition for .hack =X. Even though it'd be kinda dumb not to get it since it was literally created for newbies to the series and die hards alike. $10 extra (making the price $50) for an extra disk that explains the orignal games (and makes it a bit easier to understand), unlockable content across all 3 games, and a little figure of the main character. Not a bad deal imo, if you can find one still

Yeah, the doppelganger is mentioned in the forum by a player who thinks he's getting PK stalked by a hacker who looks just like him.
Yeah, I've got to get back to that myself soon.

i totally forgot about that post, buti don't remeber it ever telling you how to get it to appear, but as far as the official strategy guide goes its never mentioned. Tbh, i found the thing by freak accident, i had to get up and do something so i just left the game running unpaused, came back and decided it was time to get off, so i go to a portal and theres the Doppleganger looking right at me

I've almost beaten the game, I cant wait for the next part. I heard that the voice actors just went in the other day to start recording, so we should hopefully have it within a month or so.
Part 3 looks good, even if we only know of what's in a few screenshots. I wonder how many of them will actually join your team.
