Bringing back the draft!?!?! Bush really is out of step with the country. No, I'm being generous, he;s out of step with the rest of the planet

Theory?

He's thinking outside the box.

He's still a moron though.

This won't pass. There won't be a draft unless we're invaded by ground forces.

Well if the draft specified that the top 1% richest people's kids would be the first to go to war this would work well. Just remember what Moses did to persuade Ramses, politicians don't give a flying **** until something affects them.

Seeing as how the National Guard doesn't do **** for keeping kids out of combat, this may work. Then again, the Republicans may vote for it so it can backfire. Imagine this, if you will, occuring in 2008:

Enraged Voter #1: "Those stupid Democrats! They sent our kids to war for no reason!"
Enraged Voter #2: "I know! At least the Republicans let our kids volunteer! Let's vote for them!"
Enraged Voter #3: "Both parties are stupid! Let's vote (Independent, Libertarian, you get the idea...)"
Enraged Voters 1 and 2: "ROTFLMAO" *Vote Republican, cycle continues*

... because she's smart enough to realize that any party full endorsing the very idea of a draft is commiting political suicide. Hell, that fact that Rangel submitted this on his own will cost them votes. The country would have to be invaded by a foreign army for people to accept a draft.

Wow, this guy is an idiot.

I saw this retard on the news last night, I wanted to hurl a shoe at him through my TV. Talking about the training and the right moral attitude it would give the 18 year olds to be in the military for a few years and it would maybe stop the government from declaring stupid wars. Ahh yeah moron send a bunch of kids over to some god forsaken hell hole to die so you can prove a point. Die in a fire(yes this is my new phrase).

I have a feeling this guy is going to be losing a few key committee assignments, and probably won't be a committee chair.... ever.

I'd support this idea if it was framed like the old Athenian conscription: You have to pay for your own equipment, and if you can't, you're not conscripted.

Would show how great of a democracy the US is, too, by going back to the roots of it.

LOL that means only the richest 1% of the country could be conscripted... as it costs roughly 20k to outfit and train a soldier... of course with our bureaucracy this would mean the army would start taking peoples houses and such because they theoretically could pay to be conscripted IF they didn't have all of those niceties like appliances, houses, children, etc.

Damn straight, bubba! Get EVERYONE conscripted by selling their houses and goods! Of course, with nobody to buy anything since everyone would be in the military, I wonder who would buy it...

It comes from the mindset a few years of army/public service dose youths good, granted its not a bad idea on its face but the US is the worlds policing organization..its not that great a idea after all....

Now if they could come up with soemthign that gives you basic army training and garrentes you not being sent to war thats not to bad...but then these are things that will never happen in real life *L*

Then it would be sorta... useless, maybe? You train soldiers so they can go to war, actually, conscripted or not. Most nations would do well to remember that soldiers are actually meant to *gasp* fight in wars.

Thus the economy is ruined, and with the US economic failure so goes China, India, and most of the 3rd world. This economic collapse would bring down the European market. Desperate countries would sell off Nuclear Weapons, jihadists would get a hold of them and use them in their power struggles in the Middle East. (Shipping to the US would stop due to the economic collapse plus the fact that those running the ships & ports would have been conscripted.)
Thus the Middle East would nuke itself ridding us of Islamic fundamentalists plus a few other problem areas. We'd end the War on Terror ... BRILLIANT!

But we been using them for policing and rebuilding...mmmmmm no wonder no one knows what a soldier does anymore :P

well if you made every around the age of 16-19 go into basic basic training at least 20-30% of them will stay on and be full time.

Unlike a normal draft this is training only, they can be used for public service and clean up after storms and such to train them for teamwork and other basic but needed tasks.

most other nations have a basic conscription setup to toughen up their youths, the US kinda needs it while I dislike the thought of sending younger than 20 years olds off to war well kinda need to become less fat and lazy in this country >>

Zippy I'm not going to say it again, your posts are getting beyond horrible again. I know you can do better because you have in the past.

Will you guys calm down? So many alarmists on this site. I know a decent amount about Rangel since he is from my state (not something I'm proud of.) I know that he's an idiot who is out on a limb from the rest of his party. Only a few members of the legislature have expressed support for a draft. I can only think of one besides Rangel: Chuck Hagel, a republican senator from Nebraska who may run for president in '08. Those two are somewhat high profile, but both sides of Congress have stated that they do not support their calls for a draft. Read this:

Meh, what do I care? I'm gay, and according to the Pentagon, I'm a defect (http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid39500.asp)... That, and I'm Canadian. Which is probably one of the same to the Pentagon.

So they wouldn't take me even if they drafted.

I feel sorry for you guys. No, really. I'll miss ya'll.

Yeah Canada can only handle so many affluent young heirs before their economy becomes inflated and serious economic damage results. Of course the problem is most of them could just fly their private jets over. I think a no fly zone would do more good.

Illegals of course, you silly goose! :)

Rangel has been on the horn for the draft reinstatement since 2003 when the Iraqi fiasco started. If he keeps on opening his mouth like this, no doubt he'll be kicked out of the party and end up going independant because the 'Crats need to stablize their voting platform before 2008.
