View Full Version : The Next (next) Gen
Theory?

I'm not talking about the Wii, PS3, or 360. I'm talking about the NEXT gen.
What comes after this? The 360 is pretty much the same console with all the original Xbox's problems (most) fixed, and beefier hardware. Not much to oo and ah about really. The PS3 is basically a repackaged PS2 with a few "features" that Sony may or may (yes) have blatantly stolen from Nintendo.
So with that, it's obvious that Sony hires Monkeys for product designers,a dn Microsoft just likes building fancy compact gaming computers, but Nintendo is the only one this time around with a truly unique and ingenious idea.
I forsee Nintendo snagging a smooth win in this console war, with the 360 in the runner-up seat.
So with that, where do consoles go next? What will we see in 5-6 years at E3? Will Sony ever learn their lesson? Will Microsoft show up with the next BIG idea for gaming? What will Nintendo release as the successor to the Wii?
Thoughts?
I hope that we don't see new consoles in 5 or so years. This shelf life of the new current gen should be longer then the past gens.
As for the PS3/360 just being repackaging...Not really. The PS3 jump to first place with graphics (which the PS2 was in last place last gen) as well as the Cel stuff, and the 360 has better graphics and I believe a better online service (the arcade/marketplace thing looks fun). But Wii is the most original this gen, and will probably be #1.
As for the PS4 and 1080 or whatever the next XBox'll be, I don't know, I can't really picture something. As for the next Wii, probably we'll see a whole lot better graphics, or at least hopefully.

No, I know the PS3 is better, I just cannot be wowed by this system. There's nothing that sells it to me. Despite my general "No more Playstations ever" policy, I actually tried to find the good in this $600 papwerweight and, I'm sorry, I just can't.
Here's something else I was thinking about today whilst walking and playing Brain Age at the same time (not advised).
Gameboy Advanced = SNES Portable
Nintendo DS = N64 Portable (more like N62..but yeah)
???? = GC Portable <---that excites the hell out of me.

For me, it's the games that I'm interested in. The hardware of any system could mean less to me (I don't even know how to read specs), and I don't play online games at all. But it's all about the games, which is why I (eventually) want to own all three systems...(eventually)...

A portable GC would kick ass. Hopefully the next handheld Nintendo system will allow us to download and play old games. I know we can do it for the Wii, but a lot of the old NES/SNES would probably be better handheld.
Still in before PS9 commercial

I think wii will come on top as well. The ps3 launch was a collosal failure. The demand far outstripped supply, and now when parents go to toys r us in search for a ps3 they'll find a Wii or xb360. They don't know the diff so they'll get one, and in the case of the wii the kid will probably like it better anyways.
Ya know, if ms wanted to play dirty then Bill could buy all the ps3s being sold on the net, then not buy the games, that way sony would lose an insane amount of money.
Btw, I hope I can sell my ps3 for a large amount, that's my family's christmas right there.

While it may seem that way, I've noticed that alot of people I know who aren't serious gamers are still talking about the PS3. The Wii may not do so well with people who just don't understand it, and most casual gamers still have a blind spot covering the 360. The way I see it, people will buy a PS3 because it's what they've always done.

I think that it will still do quite well without endorsement from Bill O'RLY.

I think "The Next Gen" will be in the handheld arena. Or at least it should be.
Advance data storage techniques. Make more compact systems.
Then transfer the software of existing games of, at the least, the PS2 and Xbox360 to the advanced data storage format.
Have PSP like handhelds that are actually miniature Xbox360s and PS2s (maybe PS3s) playing those games mentioned above. Moreover, allow those handhelds to be connected to the TV to be used as the consoles themselves.
Frankly, I think Nintendo should do the same. The Wii is supposedly going to be able to download some older Nintendo format games (SNES, N64, etc), so why not do that with a handheld version?
Not being technically minded enough, I can't think of other advancements from this point. Compact and portable could also be a significant advancement. The only other thing would probably be cross-platforms, but could you really see a legal version of that happening? A single console playing PS2/3, Xbox360, and Wii games?

I think it'll be more of a double-edged sword. The Wii'll be good for parties and when you have the energy. But if you don't have the energy, like after a hard days work or school, it'll be better just to sit and play the PS360.
At least that's how I see it. And how my playing patterns will obviously be.

Actually, that's kinda what Sony is counting on since they really made no attempt to give us any real incentive to buy the system. They were just kinda like, "Here it is, here's how much it's gonna cost, buy it!"

WII
the WIIs power is meek but tis control scheme is next gen
Nintendo as for there" next" system a upgraded WII with controller tweaks is not that hard to see unless Nintendo could cook up something better than the whole WII conspect in all all I don't see nothing "NEW" happening just more of the same..
BTW the wiis motion sensing is not diffrent than hold a pad maybe you have to use your wriest muscles a bit more but meh
------------------------------------
MS
the 360 is "current gen" and theres nothing they can do about it in 2 or 3 years it will show its age and pretty it will not be...they could limp along better if they have HD caching or HD DVD gaming....if they do not the Xbx 2 will be rolling out in 3-4 years
the Xbox 2 wil probably have a 2-4 core CPU double the ramm, ahve full BQC with Xbox 1 and 360 and over al just be another "upgraded" system, the control evolution is going slow on MS console they jsut with the 360 figured out that yes 2 shoulder buttons are a must....
I could see them adapting a WII like motion sensing mouse and a half pad thing.
-----------------------------
Sony
the PS3 is a true next gen machine however its innovation and price leave me cold.
to truly be next gen you have to do what Nintendo did with the N64 (control and hardware, lets overlook the whole cart thing) the WII has the Control but not the hardware, the PS3 has the hardware but not the control..and no its half arsed motion sensing setup dose not cut it.
In order to be next gen you have to have the power for visuals and something innovative in control other wise your just a upgrade from the last gen this is almost like the saturn/DC days with the hog pog of tech&innovation going around sure these system are selling "well" but where the beef? theres no meat in gaming anymore its all graphic fluff to entice the brain dead horde into buying more sht Nintendo has some meat on their offerings I have always known it was a 1.5 GC but I am a bit sadden that the horde will overlook it because of its lack of graphics.
The PS"4"
More of the same, most like they will ditch the number shceme and go with a new name like PS X or soem crap and further incorporate media and gaming until there is no diffreance... ,I dont see them doing much after 5 years ,the world would have not evolved enough board band for them to go full game streaming you know where you don't own the game but "rent" it from the sever so the PS "?" will most likey be a upgraded PS3 .
it would not be so bad if they could split the PS2/3 pad in half have a analog stick or nub for each hand and 2 or 3 face buttons and 1 trigger button on it with a left/right hand switch on it so people can adjust the damn pad to how they play.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Games
Until their is is a revival or second coming of gameplay as what games are built around I see a slow decline in quality of games....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handhelds
I hate handhelds they are small unconformable and annoying...I want somethings I can pug into my TV and my loud speakers and be immersed into....handhelds dont do that well...now if they have a TV mode and a pad plug in then we could talk about handhelds replacing consoles

Yeah. I'm pretty much Tycho.
But either way, I got a Wii today. Or at least, my mom got one for my brothers as an early Christmas present. I had to dish it out for the games, Call of Duty 3 and Red Steel.
Last Wii at the store as well. And last copy of Red Steel (it was actually preordered, but the guy never game to pick it up!).
