WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration, to the consternation of its critics, has picked the medical director of an organization that opposes premarital sex, contraception and abortion to lead the office that oversees federally funded teen pregnancy, family planning and abstinence programs.

The appointment of Eric Keroack, a Marblehead, Massachusetts, obstetrician and gynecologist, to oversee the federal Office of Population Affairs and its $283 million annual budget has angered family-planning advocates.

Keroack currently is medical director of A Woman's Concern, a Christian nonprofit. The Dorchester, Massachusetts-based organization runs six centers in the state that offer free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds and counseling.

It also works to "help women escape the temptation and violence of abortion," according to its statement of faith. And it opposes contraception, saying its use increases out-of-wedlock pregnancy and abortion rates.

"A Woman's Concern is persuaded that the crass commercialization and distribution of birth control is demeaning to women, degrading of human sexuality and adverse to human health and happiness," its contraception policy reads in part.

"The appointment of anti-birth control, anti-sex education advocate Dr. Eric Keroack to oversee the nation's family planning program is striking proof that the Bush administration remains dramatically out of step with the nation's priorities," Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement.

A message left with A Woman's Concern was not immediately returned Friday.

Keroack's appointment as deputy assistant secretary for population affairs does not require Senate confirmation. He is expected to start work in the next several weeks, Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Christina Pearson said.

The department's assistant secretary for health, Dr. John Agwunobi, cited Keroack's experience in working primarily with "women and girls in crisis" in lauding his appointment.

"He regularly speaks to youth audiences on sexual risk behaviors and has been nationally recognized for his work on preventing teen pregnancy," Agwunobi said.

Ok so this guy is against safe sex, saying it is demening and destructive to human sexuality, he is against abortion but against the use of condoms. And this is the man that is put in charge of the Office of Population Affairs? I want to know how this man plans to stop teens from having any kind of sex, since he is world renouned *cough*bull*****cough* you can stop them pal, and telling them condoms are bad is just going to increase the number of teen pregnancys. Way to select another Moron Bush.

No impending political disaster can sway Bush to get his head out of the religious right's ass.

So, wait, using a CONDOM increases ABORTION rates?

So, wait, using a CONDOM increases ABORTION rates?

If you are a fundie then the belief goes something like this:

contraception ---> relaxed attitudes about sex ---> more sex (protected or no) ---> pregnancy (either through unprotected sex or failures in the contraceptives) ---> abortions.

They would like to believe that, in a world without the pill or condoms, people would essentially be afraid of having sex before marriage for fear that it would lead to pregnancy... of course this world wouldn't allow abortion either, so the woman would have to follow through with it.

Also, in this world, unicorns would roam the streets next to dinosaurs, while happy leprechauns would sing lullabies to childrens. Really, I'm not making this up!

That's some real wishful thinking there. This is the same country that attempted to impeach a man for getting a blowjob. We won't prosecute war criminals like Bush and Rumsfeld, but when the President of the United States of America tries to get laid, we get all up in arms. UNFAITHFUL TO HIS WIFE! ZOMG! HIS WIFE IS REALLY UGLY....and REALLLLLLLLLY stupid...rasafrackin FEPA...

You forgot the really funny part where one of the men leading the mob against Clinton (Newt Gingrich) was in middle of his 10+ year affair while fervently denouncing the president. That kinda destroyed the validity of any criticisms the Republicans could muster IMO.

It's ok, they had Ken Starr, who would rather suffer three simultaneous ulcers before being proven wrong.

Um Impeachment is an accusation of someone holding public office, and it's trial and removal of the said public officer. Once Bush is out of office he can't be impeached, as impeachment can only remove him from office.

After he is out of office he would have to face criminal charges, which would have to be brought up by the Justice Department, which by the looks of the ousting of career lawyers who disagree with Bush and his agenda is going to be years in recovery.

Actually they didn't hold "fake" hearings. The Conservative House of Representatives voted 2/3 to Impeach Clinton. Then the Senate held hearings to determine if the House Accusations had merit and that Clinton should be removed from Office. 2/3 of the Senate did not agree with the House, so Clinton was not removed from office.

It was fake for two reasons 1) he was not tossed out and 2) it was based over lying about getting his cigar lighted in the oval office.....

MMMMmmm I don't think both houses would impeach bush and co,but having some form of hearings about the cock ups would be nice....

I think Zippy means after a new president is elected but Bush refuses to recognize the validity of the election and stays president until Samuel L Jackson is all like "the tyranny of the sith will never return!".

Zippy please read up on Impeachment procedures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment#United_States) :

The impeachment procedure is in two steps. The House of Representatives must first pass "articles of impeachment" by a simple majority. (All fifty state legislatures as well as the District of Columbia city council may also pass articles of impeachment against their own executives). The articles of impeachment constitute the formal allegations. Upon their passage, the defendant has been "impeached."

Next, the Senate tries the accused. In the case of the impeachment of a President, the Chief Justice of the United States presides over the proceedings. Otherwise, the Vice President, in his capacity as President of the Senate, or the President pro tempore of the Senate presides. This may include the impeachment of the Vice President him- or herself, although legal theories suggest that allowing a person to be the judge in the case where she or he was the defendant wouldn't be permitted. If the Vice President did not preside over an impeachment, the duties would fall to the President Pro Tempore.

In order to convict the accused, a two-thirds majority of the senators present is required. Conviction automatically removes the defendant from office. Following conviction, the Senate may vote to further punish the individual by barring them from holding future federal office (either elected or appointed). Despite a conviction by the Senate, the defendant remains liable to criminal prosecution. It is possible to impeach someone even after the accused has vacated their office in order to disqualify the person from future office or from certain emoluments of their prior office (such as a pension.) If a two-thirds majority of the senators present does not vote "Guilty" on one or more of the charges, the defendant is acquitted and no punishment is imposed.

Now if you know about Impeachment, you'll know the House of Representatives successfully passed Articles of Impeachment against Clinton. ( my mistake, its a simple majority in the House). This means the Senate had to hold a trial to convict Clinton. Now if you remember when the whole Lewinskigate scandal broke the House of Representatives was controlled by the GOP under Gingrich. The Senate was more closely divided under Dem rule barely. The hearings that took place were legitimate as once the House passes articles of Impeachment the Senate must proceed with them. Clinton was acquitted, and thus not removed from office.
