View Full Version : *NEW* Notice of the Debate Threads
Theory?
10-02-2006, 11:43 PM
As discussed in the thread about too many mods, this is the thread to sign up for the weekly debate forums. This thread will never close, and I will keep an up to date list in this post of everyone participating.
Here's how it's gonna work.
Everyone who signs up will be randomly assigned to a side every week. He/She/It will have to debate the position they're assigned to. This means you may have to debate for a side you don't necessarilly agree with, but that's the point of this excercise. So just post here saying you want in and I'll add you to the list. I will moderate the debate threads as a neutral party. I could probably afford to have at least one of the other mods volunteer to do the same.
Also, when you post, throw in some ideas for topics you would like to debate. I will be selecting the topics, but I want your input.
I've put a Sticky on this so people can find it. If you would like to participate in the weekly stickied Debate threads run by Theory? or Tollwutig please post your interest here. We'll add you to the list in the next debate. A new debate thread will be opened every Monday and teams will be assigned, and will end on the following Sunday with a statement from one of us. Theory? and Myself will moderate the debates and keep them civil. Again if you would like to participate please post here stating so and we will add you to the list. -

Well, I'll go for it. Gotta sound articulate once, even if it is on accident! :D
As for ideas...anything that doesn't require extensive knowledge of law. Personally, I've always wanted to smash the dreams of Final Fantasy lovers. I loathe the series, and I'd like to debate anybody who loves the RPG.
Edit: It's been a bad day. Nearly everything I've posted has been stream of consciousness.

I sign up.
We could always do basic stuff like abortion, taxes, the pledge, and the war.
Not gun rights though.

None of this is timed, I hope. I'm all for it being casual debate, so long as ass-draggery is discouraged.

I don't know how one would time something on an internet forum really.
Anjin-San
10-02-2006, 11:56 PM
Well, assigning timeframes for posting your debates. Like homework or something.
pixelante_ninja
10-02-2006, 11:57 PM
Well, the timefram will be a week, all points would have to be made by then and then they move on. I mean it's casual so it's not like turning in a paper it's like well... debating.

Dudejibbity I'm in!
Oh, last time I had some good debating was in high school... Unfortunately, most of the time I was debating against republicans. And not the good kind, either. More like the whiney, "I'm right and you're wrong because I have god" type. No offense to any of the good republicans that I know are out there. They just really seemed to congregate then...
But yeah. Count me in.

Alright, I'll sign up.
Generic religion (no specific religion issues)
video game legislation
NOT abortion. I have absolutely no desire to debate abortion, though I could do so on either side of the issue.
war in general or the war in Iraq
I'll try almost anything else as long as there is a week to prepare.

Maybe not just Fox Hunting but Hunting in general would possibly work, thanks for the suggestion.

Henceforetwith, the debate threads will be no more.
We really thought this would be a great excercise, but apparently no one here knows how to do this right, and public interest waned quite rapidly. We needed everyone to participate no matter what, but you guys kinda missed the point I guess.
So we're going to stop doing them weekly. Maybe they'll come back in some other incarnation at some other time in the future, but for know, you have to live with the shame of KILLING THE DEBATE THREAD!.
Now cry!

Ditto.
I only posted what I could have for whatever side I was on.
And for whatever topic really mattered to me.
But I could really care less about vegans.

I liked it, but I never have much time to post anyways. I see why it didn't work...most of us debate with JT or fanboys, which isn't really debate so much as saying "no, Nintendo didn't kill Jesus....halo is actually over-rated....etc".
