Ah, the brawler. Choose one out of at least three characters whose differences range from simple different colors, to completely different moves, and proceed to pound the living crap out of endless barrages of enemies who all suspiciously look the same, before meeting a large boss enemy and doing the same to him.
These games were formulaic, and pretty plentiful through the late eighties all the way to the mid-nineties, but they were still fun. What were some great arcade brawlers you loved?
The Simpsons, The Punisher, Captain Commando, Battletoads (The arcade one, anyway - the console ones suck), X-Men (Again, the arcade one) and all the TMNT games were fantastic little beat-em-ups. What are some other good ones you remember?

They still exist. Ninja Gaiden Black, for example.
However, nothing beats Double Dragon. One life, and like, 800 dudes.

NG is not a brawler its a action/ action adventure game a brawler would be more like freedom force or The Warriors.
Sega is to broke to do much of anything so a up to date streets of rage game is bubye,no one is interested i revamping any brawler.
Look at the brawler formula simple and fun,it simply dose not compute to the corporate devs its not artistic enough so they can trash it or great enough so they can much off the name.
its like corporate devs are to busy slavering away at games to see whats out their, take god of war with a simi static camera give a pick of 2 or 4 characters and have them do 3 or 5 different moves each using the buttons,I love the dpad to death but GOW has shown it can do as good or better when it comes to combos......mmmm I might post a basic idea for a next gen brawler in a few *yawns*

Next Gen Brawler
Well first off with a 3d element how do we handle it we could go 3rd person but frankly those are to tricky and cam AI a pain to do,however build a game using a static cam and have levels build either going left and right or diagonally like GOW,it seems most devs have their head in the sand and think what they are working on are somehow better than every one else's when in fact its a rare game with a new idea and rarer still with one that works well,so lets use a basic GOW formula and build a normal brawler off it and lets say streets of rage.

bah you get the point, each character has 4 or 5 moves to start out with ends up with 12,maybe add a few things like move and character building(after you beat the game),combo customizing(if a move requires 4 pressing of the button it has to be 4 unless you found all the hidden/extra stuff.),different levels of mode hard having a no light enemies and such.
I could go over this polish this and fix the blanching issues but why bother *L*

Just for fun, I've been concocting a 'Simpsons 2' game (Which will never, ever get made) that would be really fun. Characters you could be:
Homer
Moe
Willie
Principal Skinner
Maybe one or two others.
Each character would have a standard punch and kick, some combos, and a screen-filling super (Moe would do his 'groove-dancing for self-defense' thing, Bart would call Otto to drive the bus up and have kids throw water balloons out the windows, etc.)
You'd go through stages that were ACCURATE to the show (No 'Moe's giant underground nightclub' or 'fighting zombies in the cemetary' like the original game) - things from the show, like 'fighting robots in Itchy & Scratchy land', or 'fighting French criminals at a vineyard', or 'fighting a telekinetically-powered Bart'.
Enemies were another thing - other than Burns & Smithers, NONE of the enemies in the game came from the show. In the new game, normal enemies would be like little killer Krusty dolls, or bloodthirsty cannibalistic schoolteachers. Bosses would be major baddies from the show, like Sideshow Bob, Hugo Simpson, a Jimbo-Dolph-Kearney team-up, Miss Botz (The babysitter bandit), Bart with telekinetic powers (from that Treehouse of Horror segment where he was the kid from Twilight Zone), etc. (Towards the end, they could re-use Bob and pair him with Cecil - kinda like how in the TMNT game, they paired up Rocksteady & Bebop after you beat them seperately)
....Yeah. I've got a few more, better-detailed ideas for this game, but I'm hideously pooped, and about ready to retire for the evening.

The Bouncer had a few good ideas but the execution was flawed. Brawlers don't work too well in 3D, but would still work great on handheld.
I want another Final Fight.

For a good 3d Brawler, check out God Hand. it's a good old brawler with a neat sense of style and hardcore action. It's a hard game, as the enemies aren't jsut dumb punching bags, and the bosses are both super tough and suprisingly versital. But the style, over the top moves, and cool special abilities make it a game to enjoy.
