No unity in diversity

It isn't merely what this article is about but something that is said at the very end of the article that catches my eye:

I find it rather hypocrictical that a college that is preparing to hold a race symposium to talk about diversity would have a "Black Student Union", clearly a segregated group of individuals. Moreover, I wonder if there is a Student Union representing each and every race of students at the college, or does the college only allow student unions segregated by race to exist only if it is an "accepted" race?

Frankly, this makes it appear similar to the "sensitivity courses" where "all men are bad and all women are their victims" that comes up from time to time.

Sometimes, these things come off, also, as "you may only see us the way WE want you to see us, not the way YOU want to see us. But we can see you however we want and you may not dispute that view".

I've always found it interesting that so many groups were so hypersensitive about our differences. The prevailing attitude, from my experience mind you, seems to have been along the lines of: "be nice to minorities because they're minorities."

Something about that line of thought has always struck me as being a much more insidious form of racism. I'm all for treating everyone equally, based upon the content of their character and not anything else.

Why do Black Student Unions exist? We all know that gives morons a reason to form a White Student Union, and they can get away with it.

If you are goign to have one group play "clubhouse" then you have to let the other make club houses of thier own,if not then force them to I dunno..make mix club huses that talk about all things not just "we was robbed we wants reperations!"

Ya know if I were attending this University I'd demand a mix European/Cherokee/Who knows what else Ethnic Student Center, and $78,000 towards Student groups promoting the rich mixed heritage of the students. I'd also enlist the Asians and ask them to protest for their own Student Center.

Someone should challenge this sort of thing in court case history states that you can't have separate and equal in education, and by creating a separate student center you're creating an unequal and segregated system.

Yeah. I mean, you could understand it if, say, it was the [Some Foreign Nationality] Student's Union, especially if they've all come to the country to study from a non-English speaking country and English isn't their first language, but this is arbitrary.
