View Full Version : Where does your nickname come from ?

Soldat_Louis

As I said in the previous version of this forum, I chose my nickname in tribute to one of my favourite groups, Soldat Louis.

It's a French rock band from Lorient, in Brittany, west of France (for info, I live in Rennes, capital of Brittany, and I work in Vannes, near Lorient). Their particularity is that they mix rock with sailor songs, celtic ballads and traditional Breton folklore. They've been singing for 20 years now, and Soldat Louis's last album, Sales gosses, has just been released this year.

You can go to their official website (http://www.soldatlouis.com/) (in French) and listen excerpts of their new songs, or go listen some of their older songs on youtube : C'est un Pays (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u57ORBlctXo) and Juste une Gigue en Do. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqU48KcOjBM) Enjoy !

Here, I'm re-creating a thread about our nicknames. About mine, it's the name of one of my favourite rock groups, Soldat Louis, French and Breton like me. I've already talked about it here. (http://www.gamepoliticsforums.com/showthread.php?t=533) But what about yours ? Where does it come from ? Why have you chosen it ?

Since both of your threads are along the same line I merged them into a single thread, no need for a second thread here. -Toll

Theory?
11-08-2006, 10:34 AM
I think name came from Knifeparty.com where I also mod. One time I was making a lot of posts with various theories of sorts, so I asked the admin to change my name. I asked, specifically, "Can you change my name to Theory?" So they did...except they left on the "?".

These days, Theory? is my stage name, so I guess it all works out for the best.

Tollwutig
11-08-2006, 10:49 AM
Tollwutig is my DAOC Shaman, who was adopted by a friend of mine. My original character was Fierad Ferratis which is Gaelic for Rabid Ferret an old college joke. When I was looking for a name for my Shaman I decided since Midgard was based on Norse I would look the word rabid in some Germanic languages. Of course the only one of those that use a latin alphabet is german so I got Tollwutig which literally means "really crazy".

Does that mean we've been calling you "really" by "Toll"?

For me, I'm good at cards and my dad would sometimes call me "Ace", so there you go.

Toll doesn't really mean really by itself, but I will tell myself it does so I can make this thing:

Technically Toll would be closer to "very" if used by itself. Tollwutig could be really crazy, very crazy, or Rabid. In English all have slight differences in meaning, and those differences are sorted out in context in German.

Silver_Derstin

My nickname was an evolution from my earlier nickname, John Silver (after the famous pirate name). Since everyone is always calling me Silver, I ended up dropping the John after a while, making Silver my first name. Derstin was just a last name I created in a game and it stuck with me since.

I got mine when signing up for my first email account in 1999/2000 . "Phoenix" was taken. It gave me some other choices. One was "Phoenix475". It grew on me so, it was my online name untill recently when I changed it to "Cecil475"

OT, this post was made on a PSP. Not fun for typing.

My older brothers name is Steve. "Mini Steve". Go ahead, groan.

Kharne

Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the throne of Khorne!

I basically lifted the name from Warhammer 40k's Kharne the betrayer as I used to be a big WH4K fan in highschool, the nickname's stuck since then.

Thefremen
11-08-2006, 01:38 PM
Years ago, when Compuserve and AOL both over-charged for their respective BBS' I chose the name "afremen" as in one of the fremen. Eventually I changed it to "Thefremen" (since I was usually the only Dune fan in any given community). Think this was back in 1999 or so.

Anyways, some band has stolen my name. Damn them.

bayushisan
11-08-2006, 01:43 PM
Bayushi is the one of the family names of the Scorpion Clan from Legend of the Rings. Since that's my favorite clan in that particular rpg I figured why not. The san part is just an honorific I added for effect.

TrentHowell
11-08-2006, 01:48 PM
mine comes from a book called Exodus Road, its an old Battletech book and the main characters name was Trent and the surname that he never officially recieved was Howell. Since he is one of my favorite book characters, i took the two names and made it whole.

Samson Effect
11-08-2006, 04:57 PM
The Samson Effect comes from a theory one of my school mates proposed back in High School. See, in School Reach (The trivia game played across Ontario by high schools), I was having a particularly good day. It was theorized that my hair was the cause of my dominance. And thus, with my hair giving me great strength in Trivia, it was named for Samson, the biblical character whose hair gave him great strength.

Hank the Tank
11-08-2006, 05:21 PM
My 3rd 7th grade teacher (that was a crazy year) gave me the name along with Hammerin' Hank. The former stuck with me through high school and I decided to keep it.

wxDiva
11-08-2006, 06:15 PM
I used to use DevilDiva, a nickname that stemmed from high school drama club I can't remember how exactly the name came about, but I started using it as my nickname a long time ago. As GamePolitics used LJ for comments, I couldn't use the name. I picked wx as it was the abreviation for weather and I'm a weather nerd.

Garbage Pail Kid
11-08-2006, 06:29 PM
Garbage Pail Kid cards were made in the 80's as a parody of Cabbage Path Kid dolls. Wesley Correira, who is pretty much my idol, is nicknamed "Cabbage" because he used to look like a CPK when he was younger. Since I like him, I wanted a nickname like his, so I picked GPK.

Yukimura
11-08-2006, 07:29 PM
Yukimura is a real life samurai who was a retainer to the toyotomi family, and a well known expert in horseback combat.

I first ran acroos him doing research about the Warring states kingdom of japans history, but didn't pick the name until I say a portrayal, admittedly stylized but very true to his charecter, in which he went alone against the forces of Ieayasu tokagawa. Upon reaching Ieayasu, and forgive the bad spelling on the name, but, he walked, wounded and exhausted to stand before Ieayasus seat. In shock, ieayasu stops his men from attacking him, waiting for Yukimura to make a move, before he understands that, for yukimura, it isn't about winning, it's about honor, about staying true to his samurai beliefs. Ieayasu tells him the following.

"Yukimura, you truly are japans greatest hero"

Yukimura died shortly after from his injuries, and was buried on the battle field where he fought his last fight.

Following that, in the real history of japan, Tokogawa became ruler and regime would rule for 600 years, bringing peace and a great degree of advancment to japan as a result until his regime was overthown in the meji revolution.

I so admired Yukimuras courage to fight on even when alone and badly injured, all so that he would prove to his former lord and mentor, the late takeda shingen, that he was a true samurai. That kind of devotion and courage for an ideal, has always stuck with me, and as such, since i like yuki don't back down from things I fiercly belive in, and like yuki, I am fiercly strong and would happily fight to the death for my family and friends, I thought the name was fitting. Like yuki, I'm somwhat brash, and have a tendancy to act first, and like yuki, am also adept at military tactics and stratagey, it has been with me for nearly 2 years now as my name both here and elsewere.

Maybe i'm being arrogant in taking the name, but i've studied and admired and followed yukimuras beliefs for many years now. I'll keep doing it, weather I use his namre or not.

Dagrak
11-08-2006, 07:40 PM
When I was at school (oh so long ago now!) we had a computer in our class room. During morning registration we had time to waste so I used to play the games (even installed Fury3 and Myth on it!) for abit. Obviously this mean't we would sometimes put our names down on the high score board. I've never been one to use my real name so I used to write weird things, one day I wrote Dagrak and people started to comment on it. Its just stuck ever since!

yukimura wasn't invincible, something he learned the hard way at Nagashino if I recall, when the Nobunaga rifles wasted his cavalry unit. I admire him for his sense of honor and duty more then anything, but still, in close combat, he was Bad Ass.

my sophomore year of high school, i took a chemistry test. Afterward i started drawing on a piece of paper, and i drew a huge robot killing people in a city with a nuclear explosion behind him, and i named the robot Destructobot. Dbot is just shorthand for Destructobot.

There's quite a few sites on them there Internets that somehow figure out your Japanese name if you fill in your own.

I don't know how that would work though.

Darth_Toxic

I have used the name "Toxic Offender" for a while, as tribute to a movie series I used to LOVE, the Toxic Avenger series. I have since lost interest in the films, and have been irritated by the fact that I no longer liked the name. So, I got a chance to change it, and chose "Darth Toxic" because:

1. I'm a Star Wars fan, and

2. I still think 'Toxic' is a cool 'evil'/'villain' word (Dumb reason, but meh)

BearDogg-X
11-09-2006, 10:24 PM
BearDogg was a nickname I got in high school(a play on my real first name). I didn't care for it at first, but it's grown on me(so much that I use it as my name for save files on games). I added the X when I first got the 'net to differentiate myself from other people using "BearDogg".
