Since GP posted about it I thought I would start a thread over it and let the regulars discus it.
Posted 08/20/08 at 06:02am
gamepolitics: I am wondering if we should move to making everyone register. Thoughts?
here are other replies.

Delete Shout Edit Shout ZippyDSMlee: garrett: also I think editing or adding a mod post in a comment is better than deleting a whole line of comments... even more so if the replies are note worthy..

garrett: Removing a bad message, or perhaps leaving it as it is, is better then removing anonymity..

Just those 2 I think ,and even if you did not have the anonymous posting on a site with good traffic you'd need 3-5 anyway, so anonymous is not the issue IMO.

I believe that Toll is a mod on the mainsite as well.

So is the anonymous thing really starting to become an issue? if one is going to post dumbly forcing them register multi accounts wont cull them down any.
Of coarse if the system dose not track or ban IPs well then I guess you have stop anonymous posting.

the system tracks IP addresses, only a mod can see them. I know this because when a mod quoted a post, he accidentally copied the IP address. (it's right after the timestamp, but it's not seperated by a space or anything)

Perhaps I was not clear enough
"if the system dose not track or ban IPs well "
Of course mods have more IP viewing abilities, its been a long while since most places on the web had open IPs.

okay, I admit I'm lost somewhere. do you mean like auto-bans based on keywords or something? or a script that tells a commenter's PC to report it's own IP address to render proxies useless?

tracking a IP or range of IPs, having it flagged in a list so that all mods will know it was doing something dumb and then banning that IP in the end if need be.
proxies work but so do some scripts to counter them, the process is still hit and miss unless I have been out of the loop that long ><

I'm not bothered about anonymity, are we talking about registering everyone and having their email, name or whatever visible? If so good, I'm all for it. I'm happy to put my name to my views if its a required field..so to speak. I already feel like friggin Cassandra anyway, more people knowing who I am and calling me a crackpot isn't going to make much of a difference.:)

how 'bout a system to filter out posts sent by a name where every character is identical (e.g. "yy" or "p", Jack's 2 latest usernames, he seems to be using single-unique-character names lately)

Eh, we may as well just wait for him to do another 24.

I guess the trouble would be programming an algorithm, all I could think of is to manually set the spam filter to automatically block a whole list of possible names Jack would use, namely (no pun intended) a, aa, aaa, aaaa, aaaaa, aaaaaa, aaaaaaa, aaaaaaaa, aaaaaaaaa, aaaaaaaaaa, and then doing the same for all the other letters. Going by this sample alone, that's 260 for the letters, plus another 100 for numerical digits, seeing as he has used a bunch of 7's in the past.

But... while he's not exactly brilliant, he is persistent. He'd keep trying until he found a name that worked.

with what I was hoping for, as long as the username has stuff other than 6 along with the 666, it would be accepted since the name isn't composed exclusively with the '6' character.
'course once the bugs are out of the registration system (assuming it's not fixed yet), Dennis could disable anonymous posting altogether

And he likes to call us obsessed, then again he never has denied being a hypocrite.

What I don't get (volume 52)
What I don't get is what Jack gains from trolling the GP main site, does he really think he is going to break our morale or something?

heh, the only time I ever recall rick rolling someone was IRL when I sent him a wake up message on my mobile.
In my defence I had it in my head because my alarm clock radio turned on with (and I do not kid thee)
"And now a reading, from the book... of Astley"
And thus ensued the song.
but in the forums? no I do not recall having once Rick Roll'd someone, and I would appreciate it if you could direct me to a place where I have committed this atrocity.
Oh and thanks for commenting on my evolution.

After the anti-scientology protest yesterday, my anonymous comrades and I rickrolled a whole bunch of people on the train by suddenly bursting into song. Best part was, some random guy sitting next to me started singing along.

I don't know of anyone who actually gets pissed upon hearing that song. I'm quite fond of it, personally.

No, but for real. At least let registered users get passed the spam filter. If you need help with some PHP whitelist/blacklist logic, I can probably whip something up, not too experienced with WP though.

Jack CC'd some letters on the mainsite again. I wonder if Dennis has any mainsite job openings for trollslayers...
