View Full Version : Why I Stop Playing

Does anyone ever get this sometimes?

I've stopped playing. It's been a very long time since I spent time with a video game. I go back and star playing old games again, I just started Ninja Gaiden again, but it's not the same as buying a game thats new to you, on any platform, and sitting down with it. I haven't done that as of late, because I can't find any games I want to play.

I sometimes wish I was more open minded to these sorts of things. I'm envious of people who need to play games for a living because they just sit and play the games, no questions. Good games, bad games, everything.

I've stopped playing. I can't find games that interest me anymore. I look at them and go, "Oh, another FPS." or some sequel to a series that sucked to begin with. I miss my KOTOR's, Metroid Primes, Grim Fandango's, Neverhoods, the games that really made me go "Wow!" The games that make me proud to label myself a gamer. What happened?

Why have I stopped playing?

probably need some variety in your gaming diet XP

I tend to jump genres alot and don't let reviews influence what i want to play. Plus I tend to stay away from the overhyped up games *cough*Halo*cough*.

Sometimes its just good to pick up a game just based on the box and just play it rather than base it off of name and hype alone. I mean thats how I ended up loving the dot hack series, I just picked it up off the shelf because I was curious. Didn't know a thing about it prior.

I tend to have the same problem as you, in fact, I probaly haven't played any game since Okami, which I never beat. I hope it'll get better when next gen comes out.

Trent has a point. I got bored with the likes of Half Life 2 and Doom 3, then I found my copy of Armed and Dangerous, with didn't get much playtime since when I got it my PC was grossly underpowered, so I installed it and began playing, it's a freakin blast. It may be a general gun and gun shooter, but the cutscenes are funny as well, and the wanton destruction of the gameplay makes it tons fun.

If it makes you feel better, I've been this way for a while. Part of it is the drag before a new console is released, yes...and part of it is that there hasn't felt like much innovation to me for a while in games. Now that may not be true for everyone, but for a while I didn't play many games because there just wasn't anything I wanted. However, I got the 360 back in June, and I've started finding titles I find interesting for it...not all of them, of course, but a good handfull. Dead Rising, Condemned, Dynasty Warriors, Hitman...they're games in genres I love, or part of series I enjoy. So I'm trying them to see what's been changed, and to get a feel for if the old magic is still there.

The other thing is...games aren't new to us anymore. We've been playing a long time, many of us...some for most of our lives. We've seen a lot, so we're a bit jaded, and the feeling we got just isn't there...well, then, maybe it's time to take a break, or to look up some older games. Or maybe it's time to start making your own, using things you've wanted to see in a game that just weren't there. Give it a shot, it might help.

What you need to do is find the original games; the unique and interesting titles you may have skipped over. If you haven't already, I'd recommend Uplink (http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/). You could also try replaying Fallout, or legitimately acquiring some classic NES, Genesis titles. If you don't have a working one, the consoles are dead cheap now, or you could always find one for free... >_>

EDIT: I almost forgot: http://www.atari.com/indigo/

Thankfully my Genesis still works like the day I got it. Unfortunately for me, I can't find the power adapter.

Maybe your a bit tired of games. it happens to everyone...you can get tired of anything, Games included.

See what's on T.V, read a Book, Play your guitar,E.t.c(I'm not goint to accuse you of not reading books, but i KNOW you have a guitar!)

Mixing it up helps. sometimes i get bored when all i do is roll around GP waiting for new threads to pop up.

It's because you're getting old. That's my excuse anyway. You yungins with yer internets and yer joy stiks.

No seriously, once a gamer, always a gamer. I recall this 70-ish year old man coming to the retail store I worked at to buy a new controller for his PC, one of those big ones with 12 buttons on every corner. He needed to replace his old one, because he BROKE it playing QUAKE 2.

Old man. 70. Broke a game controller. Playing Quake 2.

You just need to try something new. You have played the wierd stuff, like Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami? Geez, the ps2 is still good for something... Why the hell are they making a 3rd one for again? OH right, to eat your wallet.

I got bored last year, so I went on Ebay and got a really old game called Tecmo's Deception. Doing the devil's bidding was never so much fun...

Games that I used to like to play and was good at I might try to return to years later only to find that they aren't as interesting anymore and I find it difficult to play them now.

For example, F19 by Microprose was a fun game over a decade ago. But I can't seem to get the hang of flying anymore.

Some old games I want to return to, but can't because I don't have a decent enough old computer to play them. Or the game never worked properly. Life and Death was a GREAT game. And I wanted to play Life & Death 2, but it was buggy and never was fixed by the company.

And sometimes, even the recent games feel... well, like clones. Maybe a different story, but the same game. Originality is lost.

I mean, some games seem like, new story, better graphics and sound, but it's the same game in the end when you look closely. Ya run around shooting monsters or aliens with a variety of weapons. That's it. Nothing unique. Not really.

It's a mood thing sometimes too. I like a variety of genre but at any given moment I might have a craving for one particular genre or another.

Not all of them good, but those who know where and what to look for can find some real gems.

Large selection means diddly squat. I would rather have a consoole that has 5 good games, than a console that has 900 ****ty ones.

Wait a min... so you have not played great games like Shadow of the Colossus? Okami? Katamari? RE4?? How about Jak2, MGS3, KH2?

Will you at least consider buying a PS2 when it drops to like $49 bucks and these games will be 5 bucks each? Hell I liked the X-box, but there were some crappy games on that too. Kabuki Warriors, anyone?

I won't defend the X-Box. The X-Box had KOTOR I and II, Halo, Ninja Gaiden, and not a lot else.

I owned a PSX and was so pissed that I went for that one instead of an N64 and I swore to never buy a playstation ever again. It looks like that decision is going to save me $600 pretty soon, so that's nice.

Personally what i think it is, Games these days are getting to be more crap..

Or.. Its already been done before syndrome.

Media in general (movies, tv, books, and video games) work with pretty much the "If it aint broke dont fix it. Copy it instead." theory.

First off, if a big movie comes out, you can be sure a game will be there right along with it. AND the game WILL suck. But people will by it, because it was part of a good movie.

Every year, EA will put out a hundred sports games with every thing from Hocky to extreme curling. If a game is made for kids, it will be just another Super mario bros. clone. (you know, run around picking up some random 'gem' item. Collect all to be level)

FPS's wont do anything really new.. Just the same thing they did last time. But prettier.

If a game did well, there sure as heck will be a sequal and it will almost always stink. (except for my disgaea two.. and hopefully my nwn 2. oh.. disgaea.. how i wish my playstation wasnt borked)

In the end, less and less people are taking a chance. Those who do, usually succeade, unless they try to copy a particular title or genra. (AKA 50 cents game, or red ninja)

On the gamers side.. Every just ends up fading away. Games come out with a good idea, but sucky implementation. Others come out with good implemenations but sucky ideas.

My suggestion. If you want to have fun with the new games. Take a break from them, and play the old stuff. And get a computer if you dont have one. You can find fun on the internet. (dangit not that kind of fun! put your pants back on!)

Man, the KoTORs were much better on PC anywah, and Dead Rising had better come out on PC too, 'cause I 'aint shelling out over $5000 for an HD TV just to read the text (and to get an X360).

I know how you feel about games right now though. (or at least I think I do)

I get sorta' restless a lot of times when there aren't any games I feel like buying, or any that I own that I feel like playing. I'd just reccomend you take a break from gaming, maybe try playing a couple games you haven't played for a while. That's what usually works for me.

EDIT: D'oh! forgot to put (read a book, watch TV, listn to some music, ect.) after "take a break from gaming".

Once I complete my 2x1 computer, I'm gonna get back into PC gaming.

I'm definitely getting a Wii, but I'm iffy on the 360. I saw a trailer for BioShock and I was floored beyond compare. Not only did it LOOK fantastic, but it looked like it was going to be a good game.

I saw all the E3 coverage and I flagged a ton of games that really caught my eye, so hopefully this new NEXT gen will be more promising than the last.

@Your original post.

I typically have dry spells in gaming too, when I just don't feel like playing anything.

Had one this summer. But that broke when I tried playing Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and got past where I was stuck.
