Theory?

The running theme of this movie is that Darwin's theory of evolution led to the Holocaust. I fully agree with this. Hitler was obsessed with science and evolution. He refused the teachings of the church and insisted that a Darwinian knowledge base was all anyone ever needed.

Yep. Totally hated the church.

Ah, Ben Stein. Truly our century's greatest scientific mind, a guy known to most people as "Monotone dude", "That guy with a monotone", "The Nixon speechwriter with a monotone", and "The teacher from 'Ferris Bueller'".

At first, when I read his comment that Darwinism was necessary for Imperialism, I thought he meant the theory of evolution, which would have of course been a moronic argument. The Roman Empire, for example, believed Prometheus created humans, and predated the theory by several hundred years, and the British empire was of course a bunch of christfags. But then I realized he probably meant just the concept of "Survival of the Fittest", which is even stupider. Every civilaization, ever ever has believed in survival of the fittest in some form.

The commercial is terrible too. It has Stein in a classroom with a teacher teaching about Evolution, when Stein raises his hand and asks "How did life start in the first place?" It then cuts to outside the Principle's office. This is the absolute strawmanniest argument I've ever heard, where you don't even hear the poorly reasoned strawman argument. Any teacher would explain how recreating the condition of ancient Earth's sea creates amino acids and proteins, or too a lesser extent, the theory that the seeds of life came on a meteor. But remember? This isn't a teacher. He's just there to get across Stein's point that teachers are evil and scary and hate questions.

Bah.

There is a rich, deep kind of irony that must be shared. I'm blogging this from the Apple store in the Mall of America, because I'm too amused to want to wait until I get back to my hotel room.

I went to attend a screening of the creationist propaganda movie, Expelled, a few minutes ago. Well, I tried … but I was Expelled! It was kind of weird — I was standing in line, hadn't even gotten to the point where I had to sign in and show ID, and a policeman pulled me out of line and told me I could not go in. I asked why, of course, and he said that a producer of the film had specifically instructed him that I was not to be allowed to attend. The officer also told me that if I tried to go in, I would be arrested. I assured him that I wasn't going to cause any trouble.
...
They singled me out and evicted me, but they didn't notice my guest. They let him go in escorted by my wife and daughter. I guess they didn't recognize him. My guest was …

Richard Dawkins.

http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/03/expelled.php

Fox News even said the movie was utter crap. Stuff like this makes me want to scream "YOU. DO. NOT. UN-DER-STAND. WHAT. A. SCI-EN-TIF-IC. THEO-RY. IS!"

I wouldn't call him a great scientific mind, but he's definitely a smart person.

The Nazis' relationship with the Vatican was more about political expediency than ideology. Of course, that isn't an excuse, but it is an explanation.

It's also interesting that Communists had their own political objections (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysenkoism) with hereditary traits.

I also heard the PZ used his |337 hacking skills and got in a teleconference.

...And that has been a series of errant thoughts from Pelor.

To be fair, they do.

To be fair, teachers basically work on a quota where they have to go through certain material in a week, certain material in a day, and certain material in an hour. Any deviation can result in loss of funds and loss of employment.

Depends on the teacher. Some teachers hate questions because they knew little more about the subject matter than the students. My networking teacher in highschool was a good example of this -- she would get angry if anyone asked her anything that she couldn't easily answer because it drew attention to her own lack of knowledge. Other teachers, however, particularly old teachers who know the material really really well, are often more willing to go off on tangents.

Sounds like you're talking about Uni level in Canada. I was specifically speaking about Gradeschool/Highschool lvl in USA, where if you say "Condoms are actually quite effective when used properly" your entire district loses federal funding.

Ben Stein is a satirical comedian with some financial background, hes right leaning and can sometimes fall off the wall.

When someone makes the point that religion stabilizes society, I remind them it creates devisions not every one can be purely of a single religion and that mindlessly forcing it on others is plain bad, they usely know when to shut up.

*digs through mew quotes*
Religion is like sex, it should not be "done" in public, however this dose not mean one cannot be sexy or devout in public.:ZippyDSMlee

My point being Religion is a personal thing when viewed from the outside it can be pornographic or just plain icky, I wont go as far as to say "normal" religion is bad its no worse than any normal things humans do..

The fundies in GodTube and youtube have been ecstatic over the docu's trailers. For them, it seems that this "documentary" is their...godsent... counterpoint against the theory of evolution.

If this really is the best argument they can come up with, I feel almost sorry for them.

Almost.

I had a math/physics teacher who spent most of his class actually answering our questions. ANY question. The class usually devolved into discussing the ramifications of immortality, string theory, polytheism and other dimensions.

And when we were actually working, he went on the internet and trolled religious (or atheist) message boards. He was the best teacher ever and he really reminds me of that Randy Pausch guy.

As a play on "Thou shalt not..." and "YouTube".

"Thou" was just an old (informal) version of "you"... the equivalent of du in German or tu in French. "You" was used at the time in formal situations, much like Sie in German or vous in French, but for some reason "thou" got dropped and "you" is now used for informal and formal situations alike.

I know you're referring to the King James Bible there, but I'm just saying... the word was in common usage at that time. It's definitely not specific to religion.

I'm still sad that "intelligent design" only seems to encompass creation by a deity at this point. If ID researches pondered other sources of creation, be they lifeforms from elsewhere, ourselves from the future (pime taradox) or something altogether crazier instead (simulation argument), I would respect them that much more.

They probably receive hundreds of those a day. But since they can't blow **** up testing it they will not do it. Not to mention by doing so, some people would say that the show was admitting that evolution is a myth.

The simpler alternative is the claim that aliens made us. The response to that is usually to ask where the aliens came from. Your response to that is to ask where god came from. You go around and around for a bit, get the person to make a statement along the lines of "god is perfect", and then all you have to mention the platypus and you win the debate.
