What would being in an Emo street gang be like I wonder? I admire the commitment of those Mexican kids to fashion, hardly a baseball cap and lakers shirt to be seen in that video. Hare Krishnas, I haven't seen one of them for years, I used to go to one of their all you can eat vegetarian restaurants every friday night before going out.

I'm surprised that emos haven't already gone extinct due to suicide. If they think life is so painful then why do they ironically cling so hard to it?

They typically don't commit suicide, though. They just cut themselves and threaten to kill themselves for as long as people continue to pay attention.

Ok, I will be honest.
Being an old fart, I always saw the references to "emo" as being some slam against emotionally sensitive males, ie what has stereotypically been viewed as male homosexuals.
I'd always seen it range between lighthearted to hate filled. But I never took issue with it because when someone else did, they got slammed as if they didn't understand what "emo" was. So I figured I must be misunderstanding as well.
But your description, Hannah, makes it sound like I've been attributing some "emo" individuals with the title of "goth".
One fictional example that comes to mind, although she wasn't apparently an extreme case, was Winona Ryder's character in Bettlejuice? There was also a character like that in the first season of Charmed.
Although the kids in the picture aren't all wearing black, it sounds like they have a deep depressive emotional attitude? Or is that still way off?

That's way off. They're mother****ing posers. They think it's cool to act like emotional wrecks and be wristcutters. Whenever I see one crossing a road I speed up.

I generally try to avoid this topic, but I feel the need to comment. I agree that most "emo" kids are just attention whoring posers, but I have known a lot of truly messed up people that were attracted to the culture because they did have a lot of the stereotypical emotional issues and found some form of acceptance and understanding. The posers have messed up youth culture so badly now, that pretty much any non-shallow or introspective song, book, or really any form of art is belittled as being emo. I would probably be branded as an emo is I even looked slightly the part, as I am probably about as big a emotional wreck as you can come by. Basically, **** the posers, but keep in mind that not ever one is just being an attention whore.

I'll tell you straight up, I'm from New Jersey. No one knows this scene better than me. New Jersey BREEDS emo bands. I think there's something in the water.
I grew up in this scene and I know all the different kinds of kids who take part in it, and frankly, it's gone overboard. It started with the music, which is where it should have stayed, but the kids took it to the next step by dressing like the bands without any of the "talent". Some went on to start more awful bands, others just mope around and use lyrics to forge 90% of the emotional issues they have.
I'm not going to lie, I suffer from depression. I have huge anxiety attacks where I'm left writhing in my sheets gripping my sides praying for sleep. Do I dye my hair black, listen to crappy music, write about killing the girlfriend I don't have, and cut myself for attention?
You bet I don't! I wear red pants, paint my nails green and purple, and listen to The Beach Boys. So **** emo and **** emo kids.
Although early Saves the Day (pre In Reverie) is still awesome.

As far as I can tell, the goth and emo subcultures are closely related -- both consist largely of moping teenagers cutting themselves and crying until somebody pays attention to them. They both seem quite fond of black, but I think goths dress better (leather, lace and striped socks!), and emo music is far more whiny, whereas goth music is often delightfully angry-sounding. Also, goths pretend to be vampires, emos pretend to be gay men, but the difference is often hard to see.

Pretend homosexuals..hehe..they might be in for a surprise when the get to know some real homosexuals..they'd run a mile.. back in my barfly days I used to know this guy who'd get wasted with my wife and I, then start pawing me and telling us all the dirty stuff he wanted to do to me when he got me alone..very funny at the time:D

I think of them more as castrated goths. Goths often annoy the hell out of me, but there are still some worthwhile aspects of their subculture for normal people to steal and enjoy. Emos... not so much.

So you could make a doomsday bluff and thus liquidate the entire emo sub-culture by making them finally kill themselves so they don't have to witness the end of the world? ;)
2011 is soon btw ;)
Or so you could research the creation of microscopic antigravity generators that could be attached to the next Fall Out Boy cd, thus making them explode out of the packaging and fling into the jugular of any unfortunate (emo) purchaser?
You can tell that i dislike emos... the anti-thesis of metal and decent rock music...

You can tell that i dislike emos... the anti-thesis of metal and decent rock music... The bio weapons people could create a mutant version of headbanger sweat and put it in black hair dye. Then it could seep out and into their heads like the black oil in the X Files, their maudlin slightly faggy voices would crack into a pants splitting scream like Dani Filth and their faces would morph a la American Werewolf In London into gurning Lemmy's or Ozzys.

I really don't want to be "that guy", but you guys do realize you are joking around about people dieing, right? I just find it disturbing that we can joke around so lightly about people we dislike, because of the way they chose to represent themselves, committing suicide. This just reeks of the kind of image people like JT and others try to paint us as. Maybe it is just personal experiences clouding my judgment, but this just seems wrong. Sorry.
