With the crap that went on last week, and how the government just censors anything that forms a different opinion than them can we really blame people when they are pissed that China is hosting the Olympics? The Olympics are supposed to represent unity and sportsmanship right? Then why in the hell is it being hosted in a place that represses any form of free thought and human rights is nothing but a joke to those in power? I would be happy if there was a world wide boycott against the Olympics this time around.

Seriously, how in the hell can people do this? What made them think in their mind that beating and torturing this woman was ok?

Uhh how long has guitar hero been out? And they are now going to sue for what they claim as an infringement on one of their patents? Sorry but this just sounds like someone trying to grab money from someone else's success. I mean hell they have Gibson guitars in the games, they would need permission to use the names and such for the game. It isn't like they can claim they never knew what Guitar Hero was.

In all fairness, they brought it back with little to no fanfare in spite of it being the only "scripted" show with new episodes when it first came back. Still, one must wonder if the reason it was scrapped in the first place didn't have to do with any kind of political pressure.

Imagine if one day Jack Bauer found out that the endless stream of terrorists with nuclear weapons were actually agents of the government, and before he could stop them the weapons were detonated, the old government fell as DC was engulfed in flames and the US was split in civil war between the eastern US run by conspirators and the Western US run by those untrusting of the new government.

The currently developing storyline is about contractors taking over cities and towns, given free reign to do whatever it takes to ensure loyalty to the new government.

Oh yeah, and the Jack Bauer analogue guy has been able to collect evidence from an agent he killed, including a bomb and a HDD full of damning files (after he was able to decrypt it of course).

What it really is is that Gibson doesn't like the current licensing terms they agreed to to use their designs, i.e., they want more money now that the game's a hit than they agreed to.

In the latest bit of legal wrangling between Gibson Guitar Corp. and Activision, Gibson has filed suit against Wal*Mart, Target, K-Mart, Amazon, GameStop and Toys-R-Us for selling the Guitar Hero series of games which they claim infringes upon one of their patents.
Source: CNN Money [ more info ]

When Gibson first filed suit against Activision earlier this month claiming Guitar Hero violated one of their patents, I rolled my eyes at what seemed to be to be an obvious money grab. I found out later that the suit was filed after Activision made it clear that they were "not interested in renewing its marketing and support agreement with Gibson". [more info] So it's not just a money grab; it's a petty attempt to weasel money out of a company they signed a licensing agreement with. (to use the shape of Gibson guitars as the basis for Guitar Hero game controllers)

Activision has been more uhh... tactful... in their response to Gibson. But, after suing the game's retailers, I figured I'd say Activision was probably thinking. You know, let them off the "being polite" hook.

Obviously, my days of thinking Gibson was cool for their involvement with Guitar Hero are over. And I will be 100% honest here. After suing such large retailers over a pitiful squabling match with Activision, I hope the combined might of these retailers is brought to bear and Gibson is annihilated. And just to rub salt into the wounds, when the company is forced to liquify, I hope Activision sops up Gibson's patents with an irony biscuit.

Officials: Man slain over purported witchcraft use
CANCUN, Mexico (AP) -- Three suspects brutally killed a man whom they accused of using witchcraft to put an "evil-eye" spell on one of their relatives, officials on Mexico's Caribbean coast said Monday.
In the brutal slaying Saturday near the glistening resort of Cancun, the three men allegedly stabbed 28-year-old Lucas Dominguez seven times, crushed his skull with a rock and tried to burn his body, said Luis Raymundo Canche, assistant prosecutor for the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.
Two of the men, Pedro Nunez Alvarez, 24, and Gustavo Perez Nunez, 19, were detained Sunday, and a third suspect remains at large.
"We have detained two people who confessed," Canche said in a phone interview. E-mail to a friend
Some people take the idea of witchcraft too seriously.

anyway, has this been posted:
In fact, this didn't just happen to Vosburgh—the FBI has been using this click-and-be-owned tactic for a few years now, using logged IP addresses as a way to get warrants and charge people with intent to download child porn (a federal crime). The FBI has been planting links to these bogus files on message boards that are known to attract child predators, but even the log files don't take into account the referrer—any IP address that shows up is automatically assumed to be guilty, and assumed to be coming in from one of the FBI's planted links. This means that if your drunk friends think it's funny to IM you a link to something that turns out to be to the FBI's planted link, you could be in trouble.

Don't believe that's all it takes? The FBI admitted that there was apparently no evidence that Vosburgh had ever accessed the forum where the links were originally planted, according to court documents seen by Ars Technica. Vosburgh's attorney also pointed out that the affidavit that was used to charge Vosburgh provided no probable cause to believe that any criminal activity had taken place, that he was home at the time that the file was allegedly accessed, or even that there was a computer with an Internet connection in Vosburgh's apartment.

Spanish parents faking divorce to get children into best schools

n Spain, entry into secondary school is based on a points system. Judges in Seville believe that some parents are divorcing just to earn the crucial points needed to get their offspring into the top schools. Since last year, children of divorced or separated couples get two extra points when education authorities decide which school the offspring will go to.

The family courts in the Andalucian capital saw a dramatic rise in the divorce rate just when school places were being decided. The number of divorces or official separations rose from 259 in January 2007 to 387 in March 2007.

"The number of divorce cases were exceptionally high," said a court spokeswoman. "We are examining each case to see if they are genuine."

Judges were particularly dubious about how keen many couples were keen to wrap up their divorces before the March 31 deadline for applications for school places. Registering a divorce normally takes two to three weeks, but some couples seem in a greater rush to complete the process, said another court source.
Although it seems cold-hearted.... You must admit that many policies that are supposed to help underprivileged groups in fact just reward the condition.

Hmm... it occurs to me that the additional points awarded to children of divorced couples are presumably to make up for the ****ed up family lives of said children. I seriously doubt that the family life of any child whose parents are willing to divorce to get him/her into a specific school is all that much better.

...but it isn't any worse either.

These divorces are fake. There's no kicking and fighting between the parents that could effect the children emotionally. It's just a court meeting and a signature on a paper.

And besides, if you did believe it was damaging for the children, why on earth would you offer parents incentives to divorce?

And I have yet more news of interest. Very interesting...
A survey into the sexuality of the furry fandom, the fandom of anthropomorphic animals, has been published.

The survey, the first of its kind, was designed to study the sexual aspect of the fandom. This is of great interest to furry fans, better known as "Furries", as it tends to be the sexual side of the fandom which is covered most in the media. Several furries dislike the way that that the media stereotypes them, usually depicting them as homosexual and having a fondness of having sex in unusual ways, such as dressed up as animals. Although others welcome the coverage as it increases the fandom's publicity.

A sad story but it looks like Wal-Mart will win due to the contract she signed when she was hired. Sneaky yes but legally binding. Sadly this story does the people no justice and just turns it into a "Pity Her" story instead of focusing on what is going on. For Example....

Debbie Shank breaks down in tears every time she's told that her 18-year-old son, Jeremy, was killed in Iraq.

Even though the 52-year-old mother of three attended her son's funeral -- she continues to ask how he's doing. When her family reminds her that he's dead -- she weeps as if hearing the news for the first time.

This has nothing to do with the matter at hand and was only thrown in there by the author to make you feel sorry for her.

Jim Shank, 54, is recovering from prostate cancer, works two jobs and struggles to pay the bills. He's afraid he won't be able to send their youngest son to college and pay for his and Debbie's care.

Again, nothing to do with the lawsuit. Just digging for more pity.

Two years after the accident, Shank and her husband, Jim, were awarded about $1 million in a lawsuit against the trucking company involved in the crash. After legal fees were paid, $417,000 was placed in a trust to pay for Debbie Shank's long-term care.

Wal-Mart had paid out about $470,000 for Shank's medical expenses, but in 2005, Wal-Mart's health plan sued the Shanks for the same amount.

The Shanks didn't notice in the fine print of Wal-Mart's health plan policy that the company has the right to recoup medical expenses if an employee collects damages in a lawsuit.

The bold part is the reason why Wal Mart will win. A document with fine print signed by her, in a majority of cases this is what seals someone's fate.

Neighbour Jennifer Moore described the boy's parents as "a lovely woman'' and a ``very respectable gentleman''.

"They were a normal family,'' she said, adding that the parents had both been involved with a local soccer team when their children were in primary school together.

However, she said the boy had always been "a little strange''.

"The boy was fairly quiet and reserved,'' she said.

"He was a little bit strange. He kept his head down walking down the street.''

She said her son had once gone to the boy's house to play but left when the then eight-year-old put on a violent movie.

"My son had never been exposed to such violent movies. He never again went there to play,'' Mrs Moore said.

Nicole Schaerer, 18, a university student who lives a few doors down from the family, said the boy had never chosen to play in the street with the other kids.

"He was never not allowed to come out and play,'' she said. "He just didn't socialise.''

We'll probably never know what happened because in Australia we don't try juveniles as adults, so he'll be tried in a closed court. The reference to violent movies caught my eye, sounds like a very troubled young man.You never know what goes on behind closed doors, even in "respectable' families.

U.S Supreme Court gives Bush the Slap (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89100044)

The Supreme Court justices by a 6-3 vote said Tuesday that President Bush overstepped his authority when he tried to order Texas to reopen the case of a Mexican man on death row for rape and murder.

An international court had ordered President Bush to tell the states to review cases of some foreign defendants who were denied the right to contact their embassies when they were arrested. That was a right the United States had agreed to, and in fact insisted on, when negotiating a treaty. But now the justices say the president's executive power does not give him the authority to intervene in those state criminal cases.

The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a major opinion on Tuesday that limits the force of many U.S. treaties and rejects President Bush's assertion that he can unilaterally order state governments to comply with treaties.

As the U.S. Constitution reads, "All Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby..." So when the Senate ratifies a treaty with a two-thirds vote, does that mean the treaty provisions are binding on the states?

The Supreme Court ruled that they are binding only if the treaty explicitly says so or if there is legislation to make that clear. For all of American history, many treaties have been deemed to be what is called "self-executing," meaning that their provisions are automatically binding. But not all treaties fall into this category. The Supreme Court's ruling set a bright line for which treaties are self-executing — namely, those that explicitly say so or have accompanying legislation that says so.

The court said the president, acting on his own, cannot make a treaty binding on the states.

Not something I expected from this Court but it does put Bush in his place, telling him the Constitution is the Law of the Land not Bush.

DB Cooper's Parachute found? (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080326/ap_on_re_us/db_cooper)

SEATTLE - Hoping to solve at least part of a 36-year-old mystery, the FBI is analyzing a torn, tangled parachute found in southwest Washington to determine if it belonged to famed plane hijacker D.B. Cooper.

Children playing outside their home near Amboy found the chute's fabric sticking up from the ground in an area where their father had been grading a road, agent Larry Carr said Tuesday. They pulled it out as far as they could, then cut the parachute's ropes with scissors.

The children had seen recent media coverage of the case — the FBI launched a publicity campaign last fall, hoping to generate tips on the unsolved highjacking — and they urged their dad to call the agency.

"When we went to the public, the whole idea was that the public is going to bring the answers to us," Carr said. "This is exactly what we were hoping for."

In November 1971, a man identifying himself as Dan Cooper — later mistakenly but enduringly identified as D.B. Cooper — hijacked a Northwest Orient flight from Portland, Ore., to Seattle, claiming he had a bomb.

When the plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, he released the passengers in exchange for $200,000 and asked to be flown to Mexico. On the flight to Mexico City, he apparently took the cash and parachuted from the plane's back stairs somewhere near the Oregon border.

I wonder how much money has been spent trying to find this guy over 36 years.

Police: Iowa City mom, kids were beaten to death
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Autopsies show that five members of an Iowa City family found dead in their home were beaten to death.
The results show that Sheryl Sueppel and her four children died from blunt force trauma to their upper torsos and heads.
Police believe former bank executive Steven Sueppel killed his wife and children sometime Sunday night or Monday. He had been charged with embezzlement, and his body was found in the wreckage of a car crash Monday morning.
Investigators say they believe he killed his wife, then tried to kill himself and the children by asphyxiating them with carbon monoxide in the garage.
When that failed, he killed the children one by one in the house, police said.
The family van was found wrecked and ablaze on Interstate 80 about nine miles away, and police said they used dental records to identify the burned body inside as Sueppel's.

Henry Chavez was on parole for a previous sexual assault when he attacked the girl on Aug. 14, 2005. Prosecutors said Chavez kidnapped the girl, brutally raped her and then dropped her off near Woodlake Park. The girl and Chavez's previous victims testified during the trial.
"This defendant has demonstrated that he is absolutely incapable of being a productive member of our society. The defendant's compulsion to commit sexual crimes against woman and children is frightening. Now the defendant will serve the rest of his life in prison," Deputy District Attorney Allison Dunham said in a statement.

Wikipedia had little information but according to this it was the the use of racial slurs and sexual content in some its writings and the fact that the teacher did not receive permission to use it in class it.
What I want to know is why this is a problem if the school's library had ten copies of that particular book.

Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl's parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to "apparently they didn't have enough faith," the police chief said.

It wasn't lack of faith that killed her you stupid ****, it was lack of insulin. Your faith had nothing to do with her getting sick.

They believed the key to healing "was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray," he said.

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.

Yeah sorry, not even God would Rez her with idiotic parents like you. I hope they toss your sorry asses in jail and take your other children away from you. Where your idiocy cannot hurt them.

The girl's death remains under investigation and the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges, the chief said.

Charge them with Child Neglect and Murder.

On the lawn of the century-old Cumberland County Courthouse, you see an Iraq and Afghanistan soldiers memorial, chainsaw-carved bears, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

"It's made out of materials we bought at Lowe's and local hardware stores, just piping and insulation and spray paint," explained David Safdie. He and his sister built the sculpture and installed it on the lawn last week.

Catcher in the Rye: Read it twice during high school. Sophomore and Senior years. I now want to punch an emo in the face any time someone mentions this book.

To Kill a Mockingbird: Once in Jr. High and once Sophomore year

In the year that he is awaiting sentencing, T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, must complete at least 1,000 hours of a total 1,500 hours of community service, talking to youth groups about the pitfalls of guns, gangs and drugs.

Once again a plea deal is going to make sentencing on a banger easy......wonderful, just wonderful.

He had been charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers, as well as possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

And what exactly is he going to be charged with after his year of community service? Whatever it is, we all know it is going to be something close to a slap on the wrist since he will have already paid a large portion of his "Debt to society."

I hope he does not complete his issued service and faces the full punishment for not doing so.

Mexico's Emo-Bashing Problem

The trio of long-haired teenagers grasped the plaza wall to shield their bodies as hundreds of youths kicked and punched them while filming the beating on cell phone cameras. "Kill the emos," shouted the assailants, who had organized over the Internet to launch the attack in Mexico's central city of Queretaro. After police eventually steamed in and made arrests, the bloody victims lay sobbing on the concrete waiting for ambulances while the mob ran through the nearby streets laughing and cheering.

As much as I hate mob violence I feel as if the mob was in the right. Maybe now they won't act all "Woe is me, my life sucks I need to write a poem". Who am I kidding? We all know the moment they could, they flooded their myspace accounts with their poems and rants on how nobody understands their "Pain".

And by its nature, the emo scene attracts followers who prefer intellectual indulgence to fistfights.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What? Obviously they never really talked to an emo before. I have heard some of the stupidest **** come from their mouths. What it attracts is hormonal little teenagers filled with teen angst who feel the need to express their pain and suffering to everyone around them. They seek **** like this so they can point out just how much everyone hates them and then cry about it because they are "Emotional and Deep"

*Note: I do not hate those who dress emo, Yes I am confused when guys walk around in pants that look like they stole them from the children's department store, how in the hell can that be comfortable? I only have a problem with those who are the hardcore "I cut myself to feel alive" dumb asses.

It would be if it was intended as that. This idiot believes it is a justification for banning an entire religion. Not warn us about extremism.

On a completely unrelated note, Wilders claims the Netherlands has a "judeo-christian heritage" that must be protected.

Nah, that's not really unrelated. That's just another nail in the coffin. Lol double standards. I just don't go in for those type of shock tactics, I get his point now, thanks for giving me the context, the ending is a tad confusing, it implies that muslims need to take the extremists in hand by denouncing the calls in the Quran for Jihad. Does the Netherlands have a Judeo-Christian heritage? I don't know enough about your country to comment.
The Dutch people I've met and worked with all seem pretty enlightened and Liberal in outlook (except for the old Dutch lady in my street who hassles me about not re building my decrepit front fence:p), a good education system will have that effect on people. There is a valid point in the film in that we have to tolerate a belief system that does not tolerate us, there has to be a meeting half way otherwise we will always be in conflict. In Australia its becoming acceptable for minorities to criticise our western values but criticism of minorities by white people puts the critic on shaky legal ground.

KN

It is true that we must not tolerate intolerance, but Wilders was NEVER involved in the congress debate on whether or not we should allow a party that denies women membership (the oldest existing political party in the Netherlands) to be (or at least to receive funding). He was also not involved in the debate over what should happen to city officers who refuse to wed two people of the same sex because of "personal convictions". It's aaall about the muslims for this guy.

Oh, and our judeo-christian heritage is pretty much that we bounced back and forth between catholic, calvinist and catholic again for a long time and then the churches emptied and christians are a minority now unless you bundle them all together (30% or so. Kinda big but still not a majority). I'm not so sure on the jew part except for almost all of them being killed in WWII.

Meh..he still has a point, there's definitely a perception that immigrant Muslim communities are closed and that they should do more to weed out the extremists. Western governments pass laws to protect the minorities and ban the extremists, if Muslims come to western countries they should be doing everything they can to keep an eye on their young people, we give them a safe environment so they should immediately report any threat to the Authorities. If I made inflammatory, racist speeches against muslims in the public domain I'd be turned in to the cops by my own people, straight away. I don't have a problem with immigrants, I don't even have a problem with immigrants forming insular self dependant communities within our society, but they should leave their cultural baggage at the airport terminal gate .
